The question you have to ask yourself is: which one is the original, and which one is the psychological construct?
I’ve always believed that they’re both real, Mena being the nurture to Pinkie’s nature.
 
That is, Pinkie is who she’s supposed to be, as opposed to Mena being what her parents raised her to be. It’s entirely plausible for the Rainboom to have caused the nature, repressed by her parents’ teachings, to resurface, resulting in a mental split that, coupled with the intervening years between the Rainboom and meeting Twilight, gave us the “Pinkie” and “Pinkamena” (Mena for short) that we all know.  
Yeah but, that’s not how it works with Pinkie. Pinkamena has to be triggered, usually by the threat of loneliness.
Some authors and other headcanonists would disagree.

I know that, I mean is that Pinkamena can represent The depression part while Pinkie pie represents the Manic side. My friend is Bipolar and at times he’s like pinkie and other times he’s like pinkamena. And its always so sudden and unpridictable
