So I was thinking:
Grampa Grumps wears a maroon fez.
All griffons were as greedy as dragons.
They want bits.
They don’t want refunds. (as quoted in the episode)
I think he reminds me of someone. Someone familiar….

Nah. Can’t be the Shriners, not enough booze and hookers.
More then them wear fezs…
I’ve noticed that most of the sentient, non-hooved population of Equestria seem to suffer from this. But at the very least, if we go by Tolkien, we can make a pretty good comparison chart for their society
Diamond Dogs = Goblins
Griffons = Dwarves
Dragons = …what else? DRAGONS!
Because that’s what dragons love. Why? Because they’re fucking dragons.
I don’t know why this is confusing to you. This is like, THE thing that all dragons have in common.
Clearly it doesn’t have to be money.
Spike was picking up books, apples, candy, parts of buildings, all sorts of stuff.
My point was the the griffons being greedy with money makes as much sense as the red dragon with his gold, why gold when anything would work.
Shit man, if I had to maintain a huge hoard of money in order to not revert to a toddler, I’d rarely spend a dime.
Actually the greed growth don’t explain why they keep something they would never use any more then why the griffons are keeping the bits.
It becomes useless of it just sits there, the gems are the only think that made sense to horde.
Spike was the making sense when he first started being greedy but as he got worse then thing he was grabbing made less sense.
And if the greed growth is a explanation for the dragons keeping the gold, it’s basically greed so the same is said for why the griffons wanted bits, greed.
Also.
Look at all the gold there, ya them eating gems explains why they horde gold as well.
Not all dragon lore has gems as food for them, some horde just to horde.
And treasure means more then just gems.
Except dragons tend to hoard gems, which is food to them. Their Magic is also linked to their hoards, what with Greed Growth and all that. Griffons have neither of these excuses.
One can ask the same about why dragons hoard treasure.
They essentially reverted back to their old ways of hoarding. It doesn’t matter that there’s nothing to buy and my headcanon dictates that the “spreading the wealth” helped them become very prosperous but after the idol was lost, they hoarded and became miserly which caused business and by extension kingdom to collapse.
“Grunkle Stan, where did these odd coins come from?”
“I’ll tell you where there not from, a dimension of talking pastel ponies.”
