Actually, if it weren’t for people saying this and even making Starlight Glimmer jokes about it, then I would’ve never looked into it.
But because people did, I got curious and spent a whole day reading about it, watching videos of survivors re-visiting the sites, actual home videos recorded from Jonestown, reading written accounts of survivors who were there… Trying to get a clearer picture of what happened. Even dabbling my toes into the conspiracies a little but not finding any of them very convincing.
If people stopped mentioning it, if people stopped using this phrase, and stopped joking about it, then we’d be doing the greatest disservice you can ever do to any tragedy; we’d forget.
Heck, “drinking the kool-aid,” if the phrase is correctly used to illustrate the sort of wholeheartedly, unquestioning devotion to an ideology that led to that event, isn’t just “taking it lightly,” oh contraire’, it is doing the best thing you can do with a tragedy; learning from the mistakes of the past and actually applying the lessons.
So don’t drink the kool-aid.
Be critical and objective about extreme, or even unorthodox groups. Remember and learn. That’s by far the greatest honor you can do the dead.
You know,I love the fact that you never say what actually happened, prompting me to look it up.
Thanks for that. What was originally just a funny phrase took on a whole new meaning for me after learning that || 200 CHILDREN DIED AT THE HANDS OF THIS MAN.||
Was one of the many running morbid jokes I had with a friend in high school.
Like I said earlier, I particularly don’t like it when folks use it to dismiss opposing political ideologies.
It’s part of the lexicon now. It isn’t going away. You’ll have to get over it.
Sure, but when people use it they tend to mean “X has been brainwashed into an ideology” as opposed to “X has been persuaded or coerced into suicide by a leader”, which is probably a distinction worth making.
It’s not that big a deal, it just annoys me.
Well, it’s one of the worst- and most widely known- examples of the danger of mass manipulation and cult worship. It’s gonna be the go-to cautionary reference, whether as a genuine warning, lighthearted caution, or as dark humor (which no tragic event of any scale is safe from.)
Not that thinking directly about the event doesn’t continue to make me feel slightly sick…
And then there are the folks who use it to diminish the arguments of people who have different political views than they do…
People tend to use it way too freely, and in a way that minimizes the ugliness of what happened in Jonestown.
