That last bit reminded me of something said by Jeff Dunham (as Achmed the Dead Terrorist): “Killing people is easy. Being politically correct is a pain in the ass.”
The show’s integrity, when damaged, can also mean a new direction for the show being produced. Hasbro isn’t dumb, they’ve put a lot more money into the show in order to keep this going as long as they can, seeing as how their original cash cow, Transformers, hasn’t come through for them nearly as well with merchandise or publicity. Makes sense, though, but the way things are going now, they can’t just leave things moving until they crash, so a change is in order, with the only question being “What will Season Five bring to show off some form of relevance for the series?”.
As for how it’s struggling, the perception of “enjoying the show is wrong” that seems to be commonly pushed on others by modern society, certainly isn’t helping their ratings, though I suppose show-quality can be called into question, though not confirmed as an ‘issue’.

Anyway, first the integrity goes, then the show itself follows some time after. It is an unavoidable cycle that happens with every show in which its integrity falters. Besides, from what I understand from words of critics, MLP has been struggling as of late, so Larson and the writing staff do not need to do this canonize shipping thing. It will only make things worse with all the backlash of the fanbase’s preferred pairs not being canonized. (Waifu thieves and all that, like with FlashLight.)
That being said, friendship is magic. Romance is a pain in the tuckus.

I can understand the idea of how it would ruin the integrity of the show. Maybe not ‘ruin the show’, I wouldn’t go THAT far when I can imagine them going a lot further than that before reaching the point of coupling characters, like killing off a major character… Yes, I imagine they’d kill Luna off before we’d see more Cheerimac. It’d have a massive backlash, but hey, so would Cheerimac.
Hell, so has FlashLight, to the point where Hasbro’s made jokes about it and changed the second movie’s story-direction for the sake of pandering to fans.
They were paired, yes, but as a surrogate mother-daughter type of relationship. (Or maybe it is a sisterhood thing.)
But the key word is “ship”. Shipping is a term for relationships meant for openly boyfriend-girlfriend, girlfriend-girlfriend, or boyfriend-boyfriend. That is something Faust did not want because it would ruin the whole premise of the show. Which is the power of friendship without the characters being romantically involved.
I really have no problem with pairing as long as they keep them in a sisterhood type of bond (like with Rainbow and Pinkie or Rarity and Flutters). But once/if they reach the threshold of “BTW, they are totally lesbo/gay for each other” or talking about Twilight marrying Flash or Aj and Trenderhoof saying their marriage vows, then they break the premise of the show and ruin it. (Yowzers. What a run-on. O.o)
If people want to see their ships (like with me and my FlashLight or FleetMac), they can view fan work on dA, FIMFiction or here or wherever. But in the end, it is really all about keeping fanon and canon separate, which is how every show needs to be.
To be fair, the act of “pairing”, of those shown, includes “Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo”.
That DID end up happening. They weren’t ‘shipped’, just ‘paired’.
Keep the shipping to fanon, not canon. Besides, I agree with what Skunky said about it better that the Mane 6 remain platonic. And not only that, I’m certain that the whole canon-shipping thing will ruin the show beyond repair if they do go with it.
(It will more than likely not happen, but still… you never know.)

I think he’s kidding around, but I agree… It’s bad enough nearly every fan-related material is ‘shipping.
Plus honestly, I’d prefer the “Mane 6” to be just platonic friends with each other. After all the show is “Friendship is Magic,” not “Friends with Benefits is Magic.”
(Though, if it were up to the fans, that’s how the show would probably end up as.) :P
