You’re conflating the experiences of the immortals who were imprisoned for a thousand years with immortality in general. Yes, it sucks to be Nightmare Moon on the moon or Discord trapped in stone, but that doesn’t say much about immortality in general.
That’s a huge assumption. If we were talking about living forever in a cage, that would be one thing, but that’s not the case in this debate.
You should then read about sensory depravation and how it affect our mind. You can theorise that it would be possible to live for eternity and never get bored but do not tell me that you believe that spending 1000 years in a cage with no interaction and stimuli will not affect your mind and its possible to withstand it without any special abilities like i claimed here@Conred
Because i assure you we don’t need experiments with 1000 year imprisonment, there are already cases of a lesser extends of time and every mind was shattered in the process. And since boredom is the most indulgent form of sensory depravation i was assuming it will also work on a immortal beings even if they are free.
What are you babbling about? Old age does not inherently induce “boredom”, and there CERTAINLY isn’t any stupid documentation, as you put it, that would indicate any such thing as people literally going crazy because longevity made them get bored. Do you even hear how that sounds?
I repeat, you do not have any ancient youthful people to examine; you’re quite simply spouting pure BS about this.
This pic is sweet. Shipping, friendshipping, whatever (immortality a nonissue), it’s nice and well drawn I think.
Its not ignorance when you cant prove any point of your argument against it. I may say that we die if we go thrugh the Black Hole and you can claim im ignorant because no one made this experiment. Im using common logic based on experminets about lack of stimuli on human brain and its documented that humans do go crazy out of boredom. You bring nothing to the table except “i would totally be OK with that”
You’re the one making bold claims here genius, not me. I’m merely pointing out your ignorance of the subject matter.
“i cant prove there is no God therefore he exist”
i guess you won this round BG pony
Only if the plot demands it. Meghan could make him having secret crush on her as a recurring theme but we already have Spike fot this kind of “gags”. Other than that i couldn’t see any reason why they would go full canon all of a sudden. Still, if mane6 had to be shipped immediately for some reasons, Discord would be the obvious one for Fluttershy at this point.
I’m well aware that Discord isn’t a main character, it just sounded better that way. You are aware that this is Discord you’re talking about, right? What makes you think he would be looking for a romantic relationship, with Fluttershy no less? It’s more likely that he enjoys a platonic relationship with her because she’s the only one he can have such a thing with.
First: Discord isn’t a main character.
Secodn: We do have sparity, so fluttercord could be become the next sparity. Discord having feelings for her but she sees him just as a friend.
Gefreiter, have you been drinking or something? The chances of me completing my lifelong dream to bathe in lava (unscathed, mind you) are higher than that of a romance between two main characters being confirmed.
There are many sings for it but who knows?
Yeah, seeing how Tirek spend 1000 years in a little cage its must be very different for them that it is for us. Maybe they can turn off their boredom or awareness whenever they want.
Keep in mind, in their world they would not be the only immortals. If Fluttershy is immortal, Discord is immortal, Celestia and Luna are immortal, Twilight and Cadance are immortal, and Spike’s very long lived, Fluttershy will have friends she can spend time with for a very long time. Also, things change, so there is a constant flow of new things to learn. Also, Fluttershy loves animals; can you imagine how many centuries it would take to make friends with or pets of one of every species in existence, let alone enough of them to get bored with that species? Also I don’t think anyone who is close friends with Discord is ever in danger of getting bored.
For Fluttershy, the bigger downside is not the boredom but actually the changes. Society transforms over time and no one would remember how it used to be but her and her small group of immortal friends. Eventually she might become stressed and unable to keep up with the changes. She’s not like Twilight who’s driven by a desire to learn, or Discord who loves change. That being said I think Fluttershy would spend most of her time as a hermit with animals and the rest of her time with her few immortal friends; she’d rarely make friends with new short-lived ponies, and would probably live out in the forest (after a few hundred years she wouldn’t be scared of the Everfree anymore.)
Some people can handle immortality, some can’t. I don’t think Rainbow Dash would deal with it well, or Applejack, but the others might.
True. By the way, was that rant mean? After I commented, I got worried that people would take it seriously!
What do you base such assumptions on? We’ve had people over a century old who aren’t the LEAST bit bored with life, and our version of the world isn’t as novel as theirs. Life isn’t inherently doomed to becoming dull, that concept is just one of the ways people try to deal with the cognitive dissonance of death.
Maybe for creatures like Discord who do not feel boredom and are able to wait standing in one place for 1000 years. For us creatures we would probably die of boredom and beg for death after few thousands years of repeating everything you already learned. I mean how long would it took you to learn everything in the libraries? 1000 years? You still have billions of billions years to keep yourself entertained. What interesting would you see in humans that only live for about 80 years? Its like a schoolteacher who keep seeing new kids every year learning the same thing she already know. After few generations you would be wiser than most people and would get bored with their first discoveries of science or love. With Discord is easier since he can do anything to entertain himself with his magic. For us, immortality is a curse.
False gods.
@Alara Rogers
@Background Pony #4DF8
Who says Fluttershy wouldn’t want to live forever? Death sucks.
True ;)
Also even if they weren’t immortal and Discord would still be, there is one good thing in all this. If they ever do timeskip into the future or make G5 of ponies then there is always a chance that he will appear since for him full generation is just another weekend xD
Im still suprised that Discord didn’t appear in Fallout Equestria ;o
By that logic we are gods compared to the rest of the animals. I think gods suppose to be a source of wisdom and power, not users or creations of it. Tree of Harmony that gives the strongest power to mane6 might be a god even if it only stand in one place for eternity. Some cosmic spirit may be a god that created Equestria etc.
Discord, Tirek, Alicorns and even Twilight do not seem to be gods just because they are mightier than most ponies. Just like Lyra is not a goddess because shes mightier than average bunny.
Depends. I don’t think he’d force her either, but if, for example, getting the Rainbow Powers tied all of the Mane 6 to Twilight’s life force so that they are all as immortal as she is, thus meaning “Twilight will not outlive her friends” but does get alicorn immortality, and Discord knew that would happen… he wouldn’t exactly warn any of them ahead of time. :-) And he might well go out of his way to provide the information needed to unlock the box even though the Rainbow Powers are, essentially, the Elements except they can’t be taken away, so he’s handing them power over him…. because he wants Fluttershy to live forever, or at least as long as Twilight the alicorn does.
Fluttershy would not choose immortality, but if given a form of immortality that ties her to her friends, she wouldn’t be selfish to them and refuse it. Also, given how many of her best friends throughout her life have been animals with shorter-than-pony lifespans, I think Flutters would handle immortality better than most of the Mane 6. She’s already used to the idea that most of the beings she loves will die while she lives on, because most of the beings she loves, with the exception of her five best friends and Discord, are animals with shorter life spans than hers.
Depends on how you define a god. Captain Picard once ended up being worshipped as a god, and there were a lot of human emperors who were worshipped as gods, so given that he has reality warping powers, a “domain” (chaos and disharmony), and he’s unaging, Discord is closer to a god than a lot of other creatures who’ve been so worshipped. I’d say he’s more similar to a god than the Asgardians from the Thor movie.
It’s true that in the show he was only defined as the “spirit” of disharmony, but in Japanese that would be the word “kami”, also translated as “god”. In English we make some distinctions that languages which didn’t evolve under Christianity or Greco-Roman mythology don’t.
