Depends on what’s riding on them.
“You could have dated any of the smarter girls and got better grades, but no! You had to date that albino thug Gilda and then that country trash Applejack!

“Quiet trailer trash!”
Applejack: Yes ma’am….
It’s a good reason, but there’s more to the importance of knowing history than P.R.
…which was pretty s good ad what I said; after all, RD made a good point: all the Wonderbolts really do is fly. How’s a history lesson going to affect how well Dashie flies, really? How is saying she can’t represent a team that’s all about flying better than anypony else without knowing history any different from just telling her “study like a good little filly?”
Furthermore, it still stands that she was cramming at the last minute AND that what finally worked would make some silver age comics blush; at least Read ‘Em and Weep actually explored Dashie’s character rather than just hang the Wonderbolt carrot in front of her in order to drive a phoned-in PSA masquerading as a story.

But Twilight explained why knowing the Wonderbolts’ history was an important of being a Wonderbolt: so that, as a Wonderbolt, Rainbow Dash could represent them to the public.
And the whole plot of the episode was based around the notion that Dash has the pony equivalent of ADD, so Twilight had to come up with an alternative way for her to study.
History is definitely important, but yeah, they didn’t exactly explore that concept. And they also didn’t bring up the fact that the primary reason for Dash’s problem was her procrastination and severe lack of discipline.
…as far as I was concerned, that episode was Bad Seed all over again; I mean for crying out loud, Twilight literally couldn’t come up with a better justification for a history requirement than essentially “good people little girls study their history lessons.”
