Description

“Lavender? Honey? Can I come in?”

Spike slowly pushed the door to his daughter’s room open, hearing her draw as shuddering breath as she tried to clean herself up. It was obvious she had been crying. One eye was slightly puffed and red, the other still black and hugely swollen from where a pony’s hoof had hit her.

Spike sat down on her bed.

“Hey there princess, we better get some ice on that shiner.” He smiled at her.

Lavender sniffled and wiped her good eye.

“Is mom still downstairs?”, she asked.

“She’s locked herself in her workroom”, Spike answered. “I think she’s a bit upset.”

He gave her a quizzical look, but Lavender simply jumped down from the bed and walked out the door.

When Spike found her again, she was curled up in one end of the living room couch with an ice pack on her swollen eye. He sat down on the other end.

After a long pause, he cast his daughter a sidewards glance and asked:

“Wanna talk about it?”

The purple dracony shook her head, but after another pause she uncurled herself and laid down in his lap.

Spike began stroking her mane carefully and mentally prepared himself for the next bit.

“Your mother is really upset, I think.”

“I don’t care.”

“Lavender…”

“She doesn’t wanna talk to me! She made that very clear!”

“Did you tell her what happened?”

“No, not exactly…”

Spike paused.

“Ah, I see.”

“I just don’t want her to worry, dad!”, Lavender exclaimed.

Spike continued to reassuringly stroke her mane, but his tone was a bit somber when he continued:

“I can understand that…but your mother’s a bit more fickle about the truth than she used to be, ever since a big deal with a Manehattan client blew up in her face some years back.”

Lavender considered that for a bit.

“But…she has clients change their mind on her all the time. And she’s always said that Manehattan-ites are the worst of the bunch.”

“This one’s a bit different. A close friend to your mother. I don’t think she even meant for it to happen, but things just developed the way they did…and then they were quite sour for a while.”

“How come she’s never talked about any of this?”

“She doesn’t like thinking about it. She’s quite stubborn in that regard, just like you.”
Spike smiled and poked his daughter on the nose.

“But…how come I’ve never noticed it?”

“Like I said, it was a few years back. Things have stabilized since then and your mother’s on good terms with the client again, but at the time she saw it as a huge breach of trust and she’s not taken well to any kind of dishonesty ever since.”

Lavender’s head sank down as she mumbled:

“Oh.”

Spike smiled and patted her back.

“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to her. Did you give the other guy a run for his money?”

“Her. And yeah…pretty sure I did.”

“Hooray for equality!”, Spike cheered.

“You’re such a dork, dad”, Lavender smiled.

No, the incident in question is probably when Rarity was in Manehattan with the girls and Spike during Fashion week. That was when she was robbed by that charlatan Suri Polomare, who copied Rarity’s exclusive fabric and passed them off as her own.

Rarity did knew Suri from really long ago before Suri moved to Manehatten.

Obviously since Lavender exists, the Fashion week incident is something that was a long, long time ago, but according to Spike, still a very prickly subject around Rarity because of how poorly she treated all of her new friends, as well as how Suri treated her.

But Spike also told Lavender that eventually Rarity resolved what happened with the head honcho.

TL/DR: I bet the noodle incident that Spike is telling Lavender about is based on “Rarity Takes Manehattan”. And it’s similar where Lavender went off on Rarity, her own Mother–the parallel where Rarity went off on her friends after her fabrics were stolen.

Now we need that makeup scene. Rarity’s hurting, same as Lavender, so it’s up to Papa Spike to get his two loves on speaking terms again…a nice resolution.

I spent the who little blurb terrified that it was going to reach the end with Lavender’s boyfriend being awful to her. This was, admittedly, better.
