Err, knobby elbows. Wrists. Whatever they are.
Because is happy poni land. And Spike, and the rest of her friends likes her. Hell, it’s even implied that Trixie doesn’t dislike her anymore. Now go before someone tags ‘‘drama in the comments’’.
How do I like her in that context?
…It takes a lot…A LOT…of effort.
I have to keep reminding myself that Twilight’s persona is due to her own lack of will and cultist idolization of Celestia, and Celestia’s manipulation to keep that obsession there while molding her into the perfect student. The person who’s turned most of the Mane 6’s actions into Twilight’s personal achievements is Celestia, and her inability to question her. Celestia gives Twilight an award for achievements they’ve done together? Twilight’s not going to question it. Twilight finds a certain way to raise and treat Spike before Celestia allows her to understand friendship? That relationship isn’t going to end.
Lets not forget, the very foundation of MLP:FiM is based on deception. Celestia encourages her cultistic, brown-nosing view of herself in Twilight as well as her entitled, anti-social behavior until right before Nightmare Moon’s seal breaks, where she tells her a lie about Nightmare Moon, and make friends in Ponyville. Afterall, if Twilight already developed strong bonds in Canterlot, Celestia’s plan to have her become best friends with the other Elements of Harmony would be shot.
(Ironically, Celestia’s plan would of failed if Rainbow Dash hadn’t brought the other 4 to Twilight when she noticed Twi knew a lot about Nightmare Moon. Kind of reflects Twi would of never become the Element of Magic, let alone Celestia’s student, if not for RD’s Sonic Rainboom)
Twilight has her good quirks. She honestly tries to be helpful, she’s sort of adorkable, brave, holds some admiration for her friends her panic mode is often entertaining, she has some sparks of real humility and on rare occasions she does treat Spike a little bit less like a servent. And her dream to become like a legendary wizard of the past, Starswirled, isn’t a bad dream.
But then there are the problems…
Let me make this clear to assure you were both on the same page…Twilight does NOT deserve friends as good as the ones she has. Not yet, not by a long shot. Season 1 was kind of manipulative in how the group was even strong friends with Twilight to begin with. What was the first episode after the premier….Ticket Master. Her bonds strengthen with her friends not because of her personality, but with her entitlements that allowed the other 5 to live their dream.
Needless to say, the list of her major flaws is way too high. I honestly do not know what DHX is thinking with Twilight’s character half of the time, especially with the casual slavery of Spike. Its like ‘be a brown-noser forever and you will be successful for life’
…still, any chance IDW takes to reverse Twilight’s most crippling and annoying personality traits has got me interested. Her good personality traits, plus a large amount of self realization, could go along way.
Why do you like a privileged slave holder (and a child slave, at that) who’s turned the accomplishments of her friends into her own personal advancement?
Naw. She would simply say ‘‘ok Trixie’’. And probably think about it a lot later. Who knows what’s going on her mind?.
Are you implying that Twilight is incapable of reflection and perspective on her life if its actually thrown in her face by someone?
I’m still on the fence on whether that’s true or not, since she was given several smaller comments in S4 and basically just answered them diplomatically, not seriously to reflect on (from Discord, Spike, and Rainbow Dash).
But if that IS true, then there’s not much hope for actual character development for her within the show. I like Twilight, I really do….but she has GOT to learn to think for herself.
‘’..ok Trixie.’’
Sorry, i’m not highlighting Twilight or anything, but that’s probably the only reaction she would give.
“Let me tell you something, Princess. In Canterlot, if one did not wish to vanish into anonymity, one either groveled before Celestia or struck out on her own. You chose your way; the Great and Powerful Trixie chose hers. The Great and Powerful Trixie’s way was harder!”
She may be overpowered, perfect, and things like that, but people will still like her.
Including me. But i like Trixie too, so if you give me any i’ll be happy.
Welp, I’m convinced; where’s the petition to replace Princess Pampered with the people’s wizard, Trixie?
Yeah, it’s on the edge of a forest nobody ever goes into and nothing ever comes out of (except Zecora), and while it’s certainly “nearly” been destroyed several times over, that’s been by stuff outside the town, and more often than not due to something the main six did; that being something that wasn’t an issue when Twilight was given the library, which is what I was highlighting.
Idyllic? It exists on the edge of a death forest, and has been almost destroyed several times. If you watch the web series “What The $%^# Is Wrong With You?” I’d argue Ponyville is the Florida of Equestria, given its inhabitants tendency toward insanity and poor judgement.
“Slave boy” - Yes; Spike sleeps in a basket on the floor and spends all day doing chores for Twilight. Most of their interactions in the show involve Twilight ordering him to do something, with the odd sign of affection being a highlight due to its rarity. We’ve not seen him attend school or even take lessons from Twilight; all he does is work for her.
“Free home” - She lives in a (rather nice) library. We’ve seen the place used as a library all of once, by Cheerilee. Otherwise she’s never been shown to actually work the place and just uses it as her home while she does her studies. Every other character seems to have an actual job to support themselves; Dash works on the weather, Fluttershy is an animal caretaker, Pinkie’s a baker/shop assistant, Applejack works on the farm and orchard and Rarity works her shop. Twilight’s just living the life, sending off a single weekly report back about “friendship”.
“Idyllic town” - It very much is that. Compare to every other town we’ve seen, and only Rainbow Falls can match it. Good weather, picturesque landscape, well kept trees and bushes and flowers and gardens everywhere, pretty buildings in good state and all the neighbors are friendly. Nearly everything bad that happens is caused by external forces or the protagonists. Compare to the frontier towns, Canterlot being full of snobs and having creepy dark allies and Manehattan being, well, Manhattan. Ponyville is practically the textbook definition of “idyllic”.
Sounds like a sitcom to me.
“Slave boy”? “free home”? “idyllic town”?
No bias here, nope.
And that’s why Twilight is a very solid and great character. She still remains her adorkable self regardless of the changes she undergoes. This is what made the doubts of S3 finale flushed away.
Adding new flavours while retaining the core element of a character is what makes a character interesting and this is what the show is smart at. * fingerbangs *
Actual in most shows of this nature, the main character has to actually have traits that inspire loyalty and earn respect to get even HALF as favored as Twilight does without lifting a finger. Hell I don’t think even Sailor freaking Moon herself can compete with Twilight at this point. And the level of respect she gives to Celestia over morals or independent thought on those occasions actually sides more on the department of cultist or puppet then an actual protagonist. Twilight is basically not even a complete protagonist because she bears so much of her identity and morality on another person, mentor or not. In a sense, she’s an incomplete protagonist.
But that’s why I completely agree with you on why I love the Reflections arc. Not only did they make Celestia more identifiable and less distant, when asking for Twilight’s help and other things, Twilight realizes her OWN goals in life outside of Celestia’s plan of her becoming a princess. When Sombra, who by extension of Celestia believes all of Celestia’s praise for Twilight, tells her that she’s a leader and teacher, Twilight comes to the self-realization that she’s not, she’s equal to the others despite what Celestia told her about ‘we are all your students’. (I also want to see her talking to her friends as equals in S5 that was so distant in S4.)
Twilight became more strong willed and self-reliant then she EVER was in the show. She flat out told Celestia that while she was a little more ‘ready’ with the concept of being a princess if she HAD to, she is far more comfortable staying a bookworm wizard cause its what SHE wants.
She’s the main protangonist of the show so it’s pretty obvious she has that kind of favour. And it’s actually a part of her trait when she respects Celestia more considering she is her mentor and a princess like her.
Which is one thing I’m hoping more to see in S5, is their interaction as friends or on the same level rather than the teacher respect style. This is why I like the Reflection arc because Celestia asked for Twilight’s help in a manner that any friend would ask even when Twilight still respects her as her mentor.
I couldn’t agree more. Its WOEFULLY unbalanced.
@Yukimazan
That’s only partially true, Yukimazan. In terms of her life from the very start, only a few of Twilight’s steps toward accomplishment were done with the aid of friends she earned. Most of it was the cause of biased fate and the whims of an equally biased mentor. And too often in the big plots, Twilight chooses Celestia’s orders over the safety of her friends. Lesson Zero, Crystal Empire, Twilight’s Kingdom…even when she abandons her morals and her friends in favor of brown-nowing Celestia, she still comes out better off in the end due to badly written plot that favors her.
The way you compared the two is like a full Yin Yang comparison. And this is surprisingly a big reason why Trixie seems popular among the fandom. Both have opposite ways of rising to success except one has the help of friends while the other learns from mistakes and experience.
AKA Trixie is more like a deuterangonist throughout the whole series, slowly but surely.
No, it’s not the Twilight Show, but it is the Pave the Road to Twilight’s Ultimate Victory Show.
-> Rich/noble parents
-> Brother becomes highest ranking military officer
-> Brother becomes a prince
-> Babysitter is godling princess
-> Babysitter becomes friend becomes godess princess
-> Joins the most elite school by freak of chance
-> Becomes God-Queen’s private pupil
-> Given a slave boy
-> Given a free home in an idyllic town
And those are the things she’s not done anything to achieve, just handed to her by fate.
Compare to Trixie who lives in a wagon she pulls on her own from town to town and apparently has no family or friends. And when the going got the toughest, she turned to working on a rock farm, which is pretty much established as the shittiest thing ever. Hell, she could have stolen the damn amulet, but she paid for it in full. It was only after the amulet made her crazy that she started doing illegal shit.
Words.
Well, it’s hard to tell either way. I still see lots of fans calling this the “Twilight Show,” claiming she gets all the attention/episodes in the show, and such.
As I said fans are very polarized on how Twilight’s screen-time is handled in the show.
