The RAF sent about half again as many bombers as the USAAF, but it was a joint atrocity, not a solo effort. “Demoralizing the civilian population” had long since been debunked as a practical military strategy– only hardline zealots like “Bomber” Harris and raving psychopaths like Curtis LeMay still believed in that madness– and the war in Europe was finished within two months, so civilian morale was already nonexistent anyway; internal communications from RAF Bomber Command showed that civilians primarily factored into their official justification in that they were deliberately trying to create as many refugees as possible to flood the surrounding (surviving) transportation networks and hamper movement of retreating German ground forces.
Eh? Dresden was bombed to demoralize German population, just like other cities bombed by Allies. And isn’t it was UK who bombed Dresden?
Oh no, Berlin was Capital-D-Doomed no matter what; I mean Dresden, which had no military significance beyond being a crossroads/rail hub, which was functionally irrelevant by February ‘45 what with all the connecting roads and rail lines having long since been bombed to craters. It was firebombed as a warning to Stalin that America would cheerfully murder a cultural mecca overloaded with refugees if he tried to keep the Red Army in Western Europe after the Reich got wrecked.
People who decry the atomic bombing of Japan don’t even have 20/20 hindsight; the alternative was Operation Downfall– the amphibious invasion of Japan– which wouldn’t have gone forward until at least November ‘45 and would have likely lasted until January or February ‘46, and cost over a million dead and grievously wounded. Over a hundred thousand Japanese civilians died of famine and disease in June and July, and there’s no reason to think that horrific number would have decreased during the “softening up” in advance of Downfall; more people would have died waiting for that megadeath invasion than died in the atomic fire that prevented it.
My wife’s Grandma-san spent The War trapped in China, but said all of her friends back home afterwards talked about having been trained at school to attack Allied soldiers with bamboo spears and self-detonated sacks of dynamite. Schoolgirls. An invasion would have meant the death of Japan as a nation and a people; Hiroshima and Nagasaki were sacrificed so that Japan would live on.
Seriously, don’t make America care about foreign affairs.
And that’s why Australia is better.
Noone fucking cares about australia so it can actually be neutral (till chine decides to have a colony in rthe southern hemisphere).
Also Japan got nuked because otherwise it would be a sloging groundwar… and the soviets were closing in so getting nuked and unconditionally surrendering to americans was in japans favour (as heartless as it sounds).
Also if you are talking about firebombing berlin… they earned it so fuck them.
Oh man, if you make America care about what happens in the rest of the world, we will literally atomic bomb your population centers. That is canon. Seriously, do not fsck with our deeply held belief that “problems” are something that happens to other countries, we will most certainly kill you. U.S. voters were overwhelmingly isolationist until Yamamoto’s Error, but by lunchtime on Monday the 8th we were, as a nation, ready to climb all the way down to Hell and kick the Devil in the balls if that’s what it took to make the rest of the world shut up already.
I mean, holy $#!+, we firebombed the most architecturally beautiful city in Europe flat to the goddamn ground even though it was militarily insignificant and packed full of refugees, and nuked a city whose military factories and shipyards were shuttered for lack of materials, just to make sure the Soviets knew that we were willing to do that. Vietnam had zero-point-nothing in the way of strategic importance; we mangled an entire nation for purely political reasons. Over a million Iraqi civilians died because the monkey on the throne in Washington wanted to prove to the world he was tougher than his daddy, and we’re still blowing up weddings and funerals with rocket-firing sky robots in The War On Terrrrrr. Lord only knows how many Soviet citizens starved to death because one Premier after another hilariously tried to outspend America on FPS LARP gear and forgot to, y’know, “feed people”.
It absolutely does not pay to make America pay attention.
@Legioner8
Unless Japan bombs Pearl Harbor that is.
That’s the spirit
Same here, by the way.
One of the primary benefits of being an American is that giving the slightest buck about what happens in the rest of the world is always 100% optional.
@Legioner8
Why should I be? America bitch-whipped the USSR into collapse by being inherently superior at out-of-control defense spending in the ‘80s, we’ll do it again to the Russian Federation if we have to; it’s been a looonnng time since the phrase “Red Fleet” struck fear into the hearts of anyone but sailors assigned to rust removal teams. If it comes down to it, America still knows where all of its deliverable nuclear devices are located, and still has all the activation codes.
Not mad, afraid
Lol u mad, American?\
Its jsut that russia had it’s public relations somewhere on athe bottom of a clogged toilet sice ukraine happened ans CCCP mostly = Russia.
Соединяйтесь can also mean “unite”. In fact, that’s the word used in the actual Russian translation of the slogan used by the Soviet Union.
But in this case it does mean the same.
Объединяйтесь - unite.
Well, okay, I’m trying to understand, what kind of “art” you need to see here, guys.
