For those curious about this piece of Americana.  
The song Yankie Doodle was made by the English to make fun of Americans. The line stuck a feather in his cap and called it Macaroni confused me a lot as a kid, but it makes sense when you realize that “Macaroni” was the name of a famous British clothing place. The song was basically making fun of Americans for taking a plain hat, putting a feather in it, and then considering it ‘high fashion’.
