RTM? Eh, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t all that amazing either.
I sure would like to know where you espy the notion of “divine punishment” in FPK. And mockery? Mockery of what? Twilight’s OCD?
About your science comment, “science” as you’re thinking of it hasn’t independently done nearly as much for humanity as people like to think, but that’s another topic.
Seems to me that one of the reasons the episode as a whole is underrated is that it demonstrates the mistakes that many scientists do in fact make. Twilight started out with a bias against phenomena that she couldn’t instantly categorize, and that fact caused her all sorts of frustrations. She found herself jumping to conclusions and making wild assumptions, rather than calmly considering the evidence.
Also, let’s not forget the simple truth that not everything that exists is indeed testable or measurable, especially when it comes to people. That isn’t to say that there’s anything wrong with empirical investigation, but there are times when that type of research yields nothing. The letter at the end could have been worded better, but the basic premise really wasn’t as terrible as people say.
As for OAB and TMPP, we could open up similar discussions about each. About TMPP for example, “killing” the Pinkie clones wasn’t all that big a deal if you understand them to be mere simulations of Pinkie, rather than actual life forms. But that selection process was horrible, holey smokes.
Yeah I suppose I should just take the mockery, and perpetuation of the notion of divine punishment to children, like a man. It’s a “Christian Nation” after all, why not teach children to hate and belittle those who don’t believe?
Oh and screw science too, that’s never helped anybody.
I can imagine a good chunk of the users on this site lining up some zinger of a counterargument, so I’ll concede that maybe this episode got lost in translation. Fine.
This doesn’t excuse DP’s terrible writing that made such misunderstanding possible, and his love for controversial subjects. Metaphysics in FPK, clone destruction in Too Many Pinkie Pies, and Native American dispossession (seriously!?) in Over a Barrel. When you try to cover sensitive issues in a child’s show with 22 minutes to work with, it’s a good sign you should write about something else.
My apologizes for drawing attention away from the artwork, it isn’t my intention to start trouble. At least most of us can agree that Rarity Takes Manehatten was a great episode, and we can thank Dave Polsky for writing it.
“Angry atheist”
Is there another kind? :P
In all seriousness though, it sounds like you are way more offended by that episode than is really reasonable.
It’s hard to disagree with someone over humor since there isn’t any sort of standard for what’s funny. I will submit to you that the combination of physical humor, metaphysics, an angry atheist stereotype, and a child audience looks pretty ugly and bigoted.
I’m looking at it from atop my own soapbox, and if you like it I won’t complain, but I will never watch that episode again.
She wasn’t as good at it back then, and she was under stress. I think she could have easily ended up anywhere if she had tried.
I always had a problem with that scene…not because of the line, but because Twilight so easily could have teleported. I mean, she was doing fine in earlier episodes.
The main problem people had with FPK was Twilight’s letter and Pinkie’s use of the phrase “leap of faith”. Everything else about it was great.
Over A Barrel, in my opinion, was an okay episode. It wasn’t great. It was just okay…I feel that way about a lot of season 1 episodes.
Feeling Pinkie Keen was rather fun. The humor was great and it was good to see some Pinkie and Twilight interaction…Yeah, they kind of botched it thought, with how Twilight wasn’t really doing anything scientific to prove Pinkie’s antics could be possible. (She just kept saying “Pinkie’s wrong”….that’s it.) Still loved it though. You’ve got to admit, Pinkie booping Twilight’s nose and saying ‘honk’ was so cute!
Nonsense. It actually had quite a few interesting qualities to it.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who felt that way!
Winter Wrap Up, was good only without song. But in both song and music pinkie takes the cake.
I do wonder how they all would sound in style of metal. Black Metal.
>Not Winter Wrap-Up
That’s actually my favorite song of Season 1.
Still, I felt really bad for her. I love Pinkie and to see someone hate her hard work was unbearable.
