It’s not. I’m not against artists wanting a diverse cast. I’m against them screwing it up.

My main complaint is (and has always been) that artists who do Diversity have next to no concept of colour complements. Almost invariably they will choose a skin tone that clashes horribly with the hair and/or clothes. Lighter-skinned characters don’t have this issue due to the simple adage, “White goes with everything”. Unfortunate, but true.

The other issue is that most Diversity artists will draw characters as White (meaning: a distinctly European facial structure) and just darken the skin, which isn’t realistic at all.

Now, it IS possible to do a dark-skinned humanization right, and I make sure to point out when I think it has been. Emberfan is better than some about it, but still not good. As I said before, I don’t like the way she draws faces.

Emberfan is, objectively, a decent artist (even if there is “Diversity” to complain about), but there’s just something about the faces that weirds me out, regardless of skin-tone.
