I was trying to make a joke.
Knights in chess are usually given the shape of an equine head.
There’s almost only equines. Hence, all are knights. </punchline>
I could deduce easily what each piece is meant to be, and I understand the placements are dumb.
I guess my humor was just too dumb for the internet. :c

kids and pets are pawns
guards (and Zecora) are rooks
Earth Pony are knights
Pegasus are bishops
princess are queens
and unicorns are kings
But the placements is so stupid
like Twilight and Zecora are on Luna’s side dispite Twilight being Celestia’s student and Zecora has a sun base cutie marks
the Guard should be Knights
Cadance is a princess and a teen here
All I see here are knights with a few random animals thrown in.
Also Twilight not being on Celestia’s side? Fail.

And that artist failed the “bright ponies go to Celesita darks to Luna” since Pinkie Dash and Vinyl are bright Pinkie, blue and white

Unicorns = Queens
Alicorns = Kings
Pegasi = Bishops
Earth Ponies = Knights
Royal Guards (or shaman) = Rooks
Pets/kids = pawns.
Just change young Cadance to Twist and we’ll be set.
Jokes aside, it was a nice touch to put all the CMC on the same side :)
Spike to Celestia-4.
Welll. Celestia mainly seems to have white, pink and yellow, Luna has darker colors. Which ofcourse makes not much sense with some characters on her side, like Pinkie and Vinyl.
and why would it be unneccessary? Someone did it already.

Pinkie and derpy should have the most confusing but wild movement.
So yea, they should be knights
