This is, by the way, the Nintendo’s official explanation for the Mario games. They are all actors playing characters. That’s how Bowser keeps kidnapping the princess and why they all can later do things like go-kart racing or playing tennis.
As most clearly seen in SMB3, which actually includes the stage curtains on the title screen and visible screws holding platforms to the backdrop.

It’s like one of those things where a show goes meta and has the characters being actors on a show and then when they are “off-camera” they act differently.

Well, I’ve no doubt that corporations are also lobbying them about it. VPNs make it hard for them to get that tasty, tasty reliable customer data.
Extremely unlikely any corporations are lobbying to ban VPNs. Pretty much every corporation in the western world depends on VPNs to allow their remote workers (including sales, field support, etc, who are inherently remote) to access the corporate network without exposing their intellectual property, customer accounts, and other data to Chinese, Russian, Israeli, and other hackers, state-sponsored or not.
