and Sunset and the world that was living there would’ve been long dead?
I have a strong suspicion based on mamy extremely similar fiction, that that is not the case. Many stories with “return to the real world” tropes have earth not change much. The tech and social media in current Equestria likely parallels the era Earth is in.

So it’s entirely possible it’s just the case of inconsistency since I’m sure she didn’t bring up the idea of time being different and Sunset and the world that was living there would’ve been long dead?

Like Narnian time, time between worlds was inconsistent. Twilight experianced her entire childhood with Celestia while Sunset was having a few years of high school. Once a more permanent link was made between world, time was more comparable.
But whether that stayed the case forever is a different story. I have extreme doubt if the G5 ponies entered Earth, it would be hundreds or thousands of years in the future of Earth.
(As for that line from Sunset, its just a big can of worms they never opened….how the elements, the two dimensions, and Celestia and Luna’a most closely guarded secret all are related. The implication of her words, what Sunset found out, is obvious, but it raises a million more questions.)

I would partially accept that answer if literal eons occurred between the beginning of Princess Twilight’s era and the cataclysm the drove things apart, and this was just the Tree of Harmony talking, but if its the other case, that it happened shortly after the epilogue of G4, then it would feel like everything was for naught.

A potential possibility.
Bully Sunset in EQ1 hinted at special circumstances regarding the two worlds, but she and Celestia never told pony Twilight what those were. Afterall, Sunset was only slightly older then Twilight despite being born much earlier.
It would be very Narnain if the Human Main 7 were in their 20s or 30s and the G5 Mane 5 had alternates in the human world their age. I can just imagine Pipp and human Pipp trying to message each other and stuff via social media.
