Yeah, many fans would complain. Maybe that’s why we got the weird skin tones for the final product.

Okay, that does look good. Still would have been a shock to see Twilight looking like that though if they had used it.

This was Twilight Sparkle’s first EqG design, done by the franchise’s main character designer. Not used in the final product, but still close to canon. Black people don’t have to have the same personality!

It looks good with an appealing design. Besides, dark coat equines do tend to have darker skin beneath so there’s at least a biological justification.
I mean, is not gonna be a “dark brown over dark brown” or “yellow over yellow” as the coat is still usually always lighter but shaving marks can reveal the skin beneath it’s similar to their original coat in real horses and ponies, and because Twilight is lavender purple which is a fairly darker color than say, white, yellow, cyan, orange or pink, then a lot of people roll with the idea.
And besides there’s no canon ethnicities for the characters nor appliable color skins outside of EG colors so for all accounts people often have their own headcanons with humanizations. Some others also like to play with her as asian too and then some, people can get pretty imaginative depending of what they find cute, sexy or pretty of even a mixture of the aforement three.

Something I’ve never understood is why people give Twilight such dark skin when they don’t use her canon human look. I’m no expert on ethnicities, so I can’t say more than that.

Oh, just like Kora Kosicka’s first design for human Twlight. She looks good with dark skin! Kora and the production staff probably preferred to use lighter (and sometimes brighter) colors who vaguely resemble their coat colors (I’ve done some research and the human character’s skin tones aren’t their pony counterparts’ coat colors mixed with white) to avoid complaints from certain fans…
