Was a reason given as to why Star couldn’t stay too and I just missed it?
It was implied. Unlike Purple (it is presumed that…), Star does have “family & friends who would miss him” in the other World.
-> He does not have to “list” all the people that he [collectively] loves “an enough ammount” to outweight single_person Purple (because that would be idiotic and souless). It is just implied that they exists and that they deserve [at least] a proper goodbye [again, implied that they either do not remember, or do know & they did not have had the oportunity to do it (or the desire)].
