… She has no real character or character development because the audience is supposed to self insert into her.
That’s not really true tho. She starts the story as a happy-go-lucky, fairly-incompetent police mare who’s top priority is chasing tail. She ends the story after having become terrifyingly effective fighter who is continually haunted by the horrors she’s witnessed (and sometimes caused). For instance:
  • She started off unquestioningly killing anything her pipbuck’s deemed an enemy, switched to letting P21 be her moral compass, realized P21 was just vengeful not ethical, and eventually ended up with her own morality that centered around forgiveness and trying to get others to do better.
  • She went from someone who mindlessly participated in her stable’s horrifying sexual status-quo, to someone who was so ashamed of it she that avoided acknowledging it, to someone who would fight others to prevent it from ever happening again.
  • After killing her insane home stable, she fell into a clinical depression, nearly committed suicide, found purpose, and became the leader/champion of a movement to purge an ancient evil from Equestria.
I wouldn’t quite call her a self-insert. She’s more like someone’s RP of a Fallout playthrough. She follows a path setup by a “become the big hero” story, but has way more specialization/character than the plot strictly needs.

Yes.
Blackjack isn’t an Irish stereotype, she’s a caricature of the psychopathic video game protagonist. She has no real character or character development because the audience is supposed to self insert into her.

Am I the only one who realizes that Blackjack was basically written as an Irish stereotype? I mean, she’s a policepony with a white mane and pasty-white fur, and she likes to drink, shag, and get into fights. I’m not trying to “cancel” her or the story at all, though, especially since my family has Irish roots and you may as well call one of my cousins a leprechaun.

Ugh, yeah. I couldn’t finish Horizons because the end felt too much like the author just wanted everyone to immediately die. So characters that had been to hell and back just started dropping like flies.
Rage kept me going to the end.
And finding the one actually complete audiobook for PH that existed ever and being on the night shift and allowed to put earbuds in. That helped.

Tbh I can’t buy it because what I took out of how Somber wrote is that Blackjack was still always in the right. There weren’t actually external to Blackjack. She was forced to react to things, but to not really develop. So she still goes to the end as she was at the beginning of the story. She || still has a fucked view of sex, any attempt at ‘correcting’ this in story was just played off as a joke. She basically rapes P-21 for a second time but it’s all good and P-21 martyrs himself for her irregardless. ||
There are moments where BJ seeks help or guidance from the outside but never from her friends and everything ends inconclusively and it all ends without a point.
Where the story written differently to de-emphasize BJ and de-emphasize the entire group it would have been a better story where everyone gets more agency than they had. But everything Blackjack does still comes off as a fundamental good.

Is Speak close to ending? I’d be interested in it, but I try to avoid unfinished stories. And it looks like that fic hasn’t been updated in a while…
I don’t think Speak is ending anytime soon. It’s not going to be the same length as PH but neither is it a short story. Also, the story seems to be in limbo currently. The author is still working on Chapter 23, but it has been over a year since the last update.

Chapters slowed down quite a bit, but Heartshine noted how life got in the way and is still writing. Don’t think story is anywhere near ending, as some big event is supposed to happen in few chapters. While Threnody still wasn’t even on the way to the Junction City to confront her mother and major.
Edit: Her going to confront them was reason for Threnody and Blackjack to go on a journey together.

I never saw Blackjack as some cool character, from beginning she was scared. That is what drew me to the story in the first place. She felt things were wrong, but ‘just don’t think about it’. Late story moved away from her introspection and that is when I felt it start going anime like, not something I liked. It could be that she just got jaded by events, but anime like story plot made it go rather ballistic.
Which is why I like Speak so much, Threnody forced Blackjack to the ground and in turn she did the same to her. Last time Blackjack behaved like that was when she found out she was pregnant and made her rethink her world view… but still decided to confront death machine thing first in the core… I had a feeling a great story plot was lost there.

I hope Speak will gain more traction. While I did love Horizons, near the end it made me rather sick. Speak helps remove the bitter taste from all unnecessary horrors of Horizons.
I tried to get into Speak but I couldn’t. But I managed to burn off my hate of PH by getting bored over Homelands.
Respect to Heartshine for the effort tho and recognizing BJ isn’t as “owo” as some try to make her out as.

Tbh the way Fallout Equestria is framed within its own universe is pretty understandable. It’s narrated by Pip herself recounting her adventures. For what faults Kkat may have as an author, it can be somewhat waved away by virtue of it being in-universe Pip retelling it it.
Project Horizons however has no excuse.
It’s written from the perspective of Black Jack but no clear indication it’s being retold from within universe because she just casually dies at the end without it ever being written she even so much as dictates her adventures before the final battle. Project Horizons goes entirely without that excuse. If anything it has to go be fixed after the fact like if it is revealed suddenly that Threnody was the one to extract the story in Speak. Then it’s to Heartshine’s credit and not Somber’s and everyone who will read PH won’t read Speak so it hardly would matter anyhow.
