Page 1498 - Villain Is You
20th Feb 2021, 6:00 AM in A Canterlot Wedding, Part 2I’m sure this will spark a lot of nuanced debate, but I feel I should get ahead of it a little bit and say outright that this particular story beat is more about unconscious bias and unspoken expectations than it is about the “correct” way to DM.Or, in other words: How did your very first campaign(s) shape the way you approach tabletop roleplaying, from either side of the table?
Note: Guest comic submissions are now open! Guidelines here. Current deadline: 4/1/21.
Transcript:
Princess Celestia: We did everything you asked, we went through all that trouble to gather up all these artifacts… and the villains are STILL twelve steps ahead of us?!
Discord: Of course! They’re not going to sit around on their laurels. I’m trying to portray complex and cunning villains over here. True foils to the players.
Princess Celestia: We’ve been chasing them for nearly a *year* now!
Discord: Come now. Be reasonable. What kind of game would D&D be… if the DM just let the players seize victory merely because they *wanted* it?
DM: … Alright.
Twilight Sparkle: <gasp> Really?
DM: You… You win.
I think the DM is remembering a time when they were a player, and despite having a great plan and doing everything as best as they could, the DM said “lol but it’s more realistic for evil to win.” So, drawing from how that felt as a player, they go “…okay, it’s not a stupid plan, and it’s really disappointing for all their work to go to waste. I’ll give them their fun.”
