You know, I think you have a good point. But if you pay attention to the design of girl-spike, there are changes, but they are too subtle. I agree with you, there should be a few more details to make her look more like a girl, rather than a version of spike with eyelashes and different ear-fins.
I agree about the slapstick that happens to spike. When it’s genderswapped…it would leave a bad taste in many mouths (especially women). In that case, double-standards would definitely be apparent. If anything, anything bad that happens to spike, would probably not happen to a girl spike. It’s not fair that when it happens to a boy it’s okay (cause I actually kinda feel bad for him when it happens), but with a girl it’s the worst thing ever. I guess life’s kinda screwy like that.
But yeah, in a fandom with so many of you being creative artists, and writers, I’m just confused as to why none have attempted to wither make a more appealing design of her, of even an interesting story. Who knows? Maybe I will do my own soon.

I think it’s a matter of someone inventing an appealing female Spike that can catch on.
I mean, even when all the mane cast is genderbent, Spike frequently stays a boy. And when he doesn’t, he still stays pretty much the same. Mares change to stallions but Spike is dragon -> dragon? And it’s difficult to make his personality work too ‘cause a young boy hanging with and constantly getting pushed around by girls is funny, but the reverse? I’m not saying it couldn’t be made work (Spike wasn’t such an obvious character either), but someone will has to figure out first.

Eh, in my eyes, Spike is at least in his teens (in pony years, maybe)
Not to mention, selfcest is kinda creepy… if you’d consider the whole “like brother and sister” to the whole genderswap meets normal thing.

It’s up to each person to come up with how old Spike is, to me even if a “baby” Spike is still at lest a year older the the CMC.
I have to agree with you that selfcest seems lazy, but to me it also seems the most unlikely to happen, they are the same person and as much as having similarities between two people may help in a relationship when you have to much the same it makes it much harder, it’s why the saying “opposites attract” is so well known, in all it’s helps to have more different traits then similar make a better relationship.
I’m just saying I find it weird that there’s actually a lot more you could do with the two, is the genders were reversed.
Like a story about girl-spike’s crush on male-rarity, and how he tries to avoid it. Mainly because he doesn’t know how to feel about her, or how society would feel he did get with someone younger. I mean, something like that could be so interesting, yet no one’s tried to write something like that….looks like I’ve got myself a new project.
But anyway, if you like selfcest, that’s fine, because it’s all opinion based. It may not be my thing, because it seems kinda lazy to do. Anyone could reverse genders of a character, and pair them up. They’re the same person. But to find characters, with two different traits, and give them a special connection, is really interesting.
Because selfcest is apparently more appealing.
I’m not even asking for shipping pictures, just simple pictures of the two gem hunting to hanging out? Something casual like that?
