I think it’s cute how Scootaloo sleeps on her parents’s grave while Rainbow Dash watches. RIP scoot’s parents.

Not entirely true. It’s possible they just gave her up for adoption when she was born. Maybe they weren’t sure they could raise her well, or maybe they were barely making ends meet and wanted her to grow up in a house that had food on the table. It’s possible she’s never met her birth parents. If that isn’t a potential drama bomb, I don’t know what is.
 
Sweetie Belle: “Your parents are alive! Do you know what this means?”  
Scootaloo: “It means they don’t care! They’ve never checked in to seem how I was doing, they never even sent a letter!”  
Apple Bloom: “Scootaloo, Ah know yer mad, but Ah know Ah’d do anything to get mah parents back…”

…Besides, think of the fanfic potential. Rainbow Dash adopting Scootaloo can only happen if Scootaloo’s parents are dead or very bad at being parents. There are other versions, where she’s adopted by another of the Mane Six, or by Princess Luna, or by Lyra and Bon Bon. Or she is actually a Breezie, or was created in a mad scientist’s lab and has the potential to become an alicorn.
 
Really, that she has a perfectly normal family that we just haven’t seen yet is the least fun possibility. Unless it’s the punchline to a story with everyone else wondering if she’s an orphan/demigod/etc. because nobody ever sees her family.

I have wondered why we don’t come up with dark fates for Fluttershy’s also-unseen family. Of course, Scoots is a school kid, so never seeing her family is a little bigger of a deal.

Why are people so morbid around Scootaloo?! We’ve never seen Rainbow Dash’s or Fluttershy’s parents, are they dead too?! are you doing to say they were brutally murdered as well!? Do you think maybe Scoots wanted Dash as a sister becasue she’s an only child OR the only pegisus in a house of earth ponies?! but no. Her entire family is dead and she lives as an orphan vagabond. ಠ_ಠ
