I couldn’t agree more. I study medieval history myself and what’s fascinating is how the iconographers were able to craft those stories into their works, or even illuminations from medieval texts where they artfully design such detail in the first letter of a chapter.

Honestly, I’m more impressed that this kind of (fan)art is possible at all, considering the source of inspiration is incredibly abstracted from an already abstracted view of horses. Whereas traditional art, traditionally, is derived from an existing setting or occurrence. Unless it’s biblical, but even then you have the luxury of masters to study from who’ve already figured it out for you. I have only the highest respect for the ancient works, but I also appreciate the diamond in the rough (fan)art in a saturated sea of shit and piss. It brings me joy to know that some standards are still upheld, despite their unorthodox form and technique(digital). En garde!

Fan art is a funny thing. When it comes to the internet nobody really cares how much time someone spent on an image or whether or not it’s artistically profound. “Cute” will trump “talent” nearly every time. Scores and numbers are pretty much useless as a means of determining a submission’s worth so try not to pay them much mind. A simple drawing of Pikachu can blow an intricate landscape away with the attention it gets but that’s just the nature of the internet.

I wouldn’t go that far at all. Traditional artwork found in museums (with the exception of modern art museums, where a blank canvas like the one shown might be found) is generally well made by an artist that is trying to turn their view of the world into an image. Everything in said painting, wether it be the color choice, strokes, or texture, is meant to tell a story. Plus many of the paintings are hundreds of years old, and have stood the test of time due to their exceptional form and composition, as well as their ability to show what life from that time period as well.
Don’t think I am trying to be smug-that isnt who I am, and you shouldn’t insult me in that way. I am just trying to point out the juxtaposition between fan art and traditional art, especially hand painted art that I have a ton of respect for due to how long and tedious making a painting is (I have done it before, and I would know-it isnt easy at all, and my painting didn’t turn out that well)

Sounds like you’re trying to be smug about things you don’t understand. It’s a simple, cute image.

Also, the reason why you don’t see fan art in art museums is due to how fan art isn’t taken seriously and is usually meant to be pleasing to the eyes, where art museums are more interested in “deep” art which may just be a blank canvas (image at the bottom). It’s a system full of people high on their own farts.

Also, funny how the non-artist understands art so well. I’m not a good artist, but at least I know not to judge things I don’t understand, and certainly not to make myself look smarter or more “enlighten” than I actually am.

It is certainly Derpibooru bait as much as any suggestive drawing would be, I can say. Artistically it isn’t interesting, but fan art rarely is. That’s why you never see them in art museums
