Backstory: She was born to the once-benevolent rulers of the Sky Kingdom, Lord Draven and Lady Cherry, and her older brother Julian the Legend. Her birth name was Laurier Noir, but she was simply called Black Laurel. She was very curious and naive, and was someone who wanted to explore the world outside of the Sky Kingdom. Because she was very young, the only place she was ever allowed to go outside of the Sky Kingdom was the neighboring Jungle Kingdom, with the supervision of either her brother or mother.
Although she and Julian didn’t always get along just like any other sibling relationship, they still loved each other. One day, Laurel got herself into a bit of trouble by exploring the outside forests of the Jungle Kingdom, where she accidentally encountered a Chimera. When Laurel cried for help, her brother Julian knew what to do, so he stood up to the Chimera by wielding a sword at it, scaring it away. When Julian earned his cutie mark, Laurel began to appreciate him and be there for him even more. Whenever Julian practiced his magic and sword fighting skills, Laurel would always watch him, looking up to him as a heroic figure, especially considering that they were both siblings. Growing up, Laurel discovered that she had the same ability to use her magic from her eyes just like her brother.
Life began to change for the siblings when their father, Lord Draven, began to rule the Jungle Kingdom, leaving only their mother, Lady Cherry, to rule the Sky Kingdom. During Lord Draven’s reign, he became so cruel and tyrannical, he turned every citizen in the Jungle Kingdom to his slaves, due to the fact that he saw them nothing more than prisoners and peasants. Like her husband, Lady Cherry also became cruel and wicked, turning the Sky Kingdom from a peaceful kingdom into a dictatorship. Laurel and Julian had no choice but to flee from their home kingdom before Princess Celestia could banish the two kingdoms into limbo, in which their parents, however, survived, meaning that they were still out there. While Lady Cherry went in hiding, Lord Draven used his magic to disguise himself as a different pony.
Lost, traumatized, and betrayed by the fact that their own parents became tyrannical dictators, the two siblings wandered around the wilds of Equestria, trying to find shelter. At one point, however, they were chased by Queen Chrysalis and her changeling swarm, causing them to part ways and to possibly never see each other again. While Julian ended up finding his home in the Everfree Forest, Laurel was taken by the Royal Guards of Canterlot.
Having been put up for adoption, Laurel was scared and escaped Canterlot’s adoption center on her own. Eventually she found someone who seemed to be very kind enough to be her mother: Rosy Tea, and Laurel discovered that Rosy was pregnant with a foal. Despite the discovery, Laurel explained to Rosy about her situation, and Rosy adopted her as her daughter, not only because Laurel was orphaned, but also due to the fear that Rosy would lose her unborn foal due to miscarriage. However, the pregnancy was a success, and the foal was born healthy. While Laurel was happy have a new family in time to see her adoptive younger sister Aria, she also became rivals with her new older brother Canon Harmony. Oftentimes, they would argue over the most unimportant things, like who was better at singing, who was the best sibling, etc., and all it did was make little Aria giggle, who was a foal at the time, and Rosy Tea didn’t seem to mind it at all, since she thought it was something that adoptive siblings would do. Even though Laurel felt very welcome in her new family, at the same time, she felt sad and alone, and she missed her brother, Julian, very much, and wished that she would see him again. She even thought about her brother and wondered about how he felt about her being in a new family.
Being an addition to Aria’s family, Laurel decided to be there for her no matter what happened. Together, she would sing songs and tell stories to her. Unlike her adoptive siblings, who went to school, Black Laurel had to be homeschooled by Rosy Tea due to the fact that Laurel went through so much, and she didn’t want her adopted daughter to suffer more due to potential bullying. However, it was Aria who came back from school with emotional problems due to bullying and abuse from other students. When Aria’s family, especially Black Laurel, saw that Aria was hurting herself to cope with her problems, they had no choice but to get her the help she needed.
Some time after being in Canterlot, Black Laurel began to feel a sense of freedom. Before her teenage years, Laurel began to show interest in fashion and music. She was so awed by the sight of the beauty of dresses, she decided to take an interest in fashion designing. She created her very first dress, which was a Gothic one, and much to the pleasure of her family, she earned her cutie mark! The more creativity she had, the more dresses she made. Most of the dresses she made consisted of dark and elegant colors due to her interest in the goth subculture. She’s nicknamed as the “Fashionista Demon.”
While Black Laurel is still troubled at her past and losing her brother, she has found happiness in where she is at now. Whenever she’s not fashion designing, she likes to investigate crimes in order to serve justice for its victims just so they won’t suffer the same thing she had to go through. She’s also very happy to know that there are ponies out there who enjoy her outfits, including Alyssa Rice, Destiny Blood, and Grace (who was briefly Laurel’s girlfriend when she became her therapist and partner during an investigation that scarred Laurel for life). Most of all, she is very happy to know that her brother is still alive, and that one day, they will be together again.
