Not all of them. (Discord.)
They’re a very important tradition in places that still do executions
By last meals I meant giving them the choice of what to Have as there last meal, not having a last meal in general.
Edited
If the last meals for death row inmates are a prime example of wasteful government spending, you are an incurable brainlet.
That said, they don’t use captive bolts because that might release blood and/or brain material and that’s just gross (see also: guillotines).
Those are some good points, I guess it would have to saved for situations with colossal amounts of evidence along with at least a few years for any more to come up. After that though it seems like killing them shouldn’t be delayed or subject to wasteful tradition such as last meals. And instead of injection they could have something like an automatic captive bolt machine: you strap their head in, press a button, and a bolt goes through their brain. Quick, easy, and it doesn’t require refilling with poison, just a power supply and some occasional maintenance
Oh, you meant like a court ordered firing squad, I’m sorry for the confusion it’s just that we don’t do that very often anymore. Considering that the silver needle award is much cleaner, marginally less mean, and less psychologically abusive to the executioners (even though this is literally what they signed up for).
Although to address your previous idea of executing people immediately after sentencing, there are quite a few reasons why we don’t do this, one being that that individual has to be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, which means that in his/her lengthy trial period (which is optional, remember you have the right to a speedy trial) conflicting evidence may have to be dealt with, then there’s the human rights activists that will try to save this clearly dangerous individual to the best of their efforts which will only delay the inevitable at best, and there’s the last rights that most religious people support, they find comfort in giving people a proper send off with the opportunity of redemption in the afterlife, so they might want see a priest for a “proper” send off. Their last day may include a taxpayer funded feast and well try to give them some of their clothes. Its hard to remain as “humane” as possible, when you know whats about to follow. As you can see its very difficult to “ethically” kill someone.
(imagine if we did this with our meat produce: “any last words” “moo” )
Well yeah, of course that’s a bad idea, and that’s not what I meant at all.
If you say so, but I still think it would be a bad idea to let cops just open fire on violent criminals whenever they want, that would definitely enable the trigger happy psychos they’ve been made out to be in recent years. When just one of them exhibits this bad behavior, it makes us all look bad.
There’s so many detrimental traditions, rituals, and people that could be eliminated that make things so much more efficient.

That may infact be easier but we prefer to stick to our routine for the sake of being fair and humane, even if it may not make sense. Notably a death row inmate can have a heart attack (he was under a lot of stress) the night before his big day with his sky daddy, but even though we knew we were going to kill his ass in the morning we still rushed him to the hospital and spent thousands of the taxpayers dollars on medical care only to almost immediately throw it away when his time came. Sure we could have just let him die on his own, or even let the suicidal ones just off themselves and die on their own terms, but we don’t for the sake of tradition, the death penalty is a sign of the state’s power and our methods are our dedication to “justice” and that’s the point, we’re so hell bent on punishing people the “right way” that we follow rules that don’t even make sense because it was all “part of the plan”, our judicial system is supposedly the best among its peers but even to the trained eye it can be difficult to understand. I’m not saying the death penalty is a bad thing, its definitely a waste of human flesh, but if someone is a genuine threat to their community and refuses to be rehabilitated there’s simply nothing we can do, we can’t change people’s minds (not literally) and we can’t bring the people they took from us back, and I know vengeance won’t make us happy again but we find it much easier to sleep at night knowing that he can’t hurt anyone anymore.

We were kind’ve hoping no one would notice.
Unforgivable.
