Late in replying, but Common Ground happened because A) Patton Oswalt wanted to do another episode, and B) Wind Sprint is voiced by his biological daughter (who is a huge MLP fan herself) and Clear Sky voiced by his second wife/his daughter’s stepmother. There actually is a family dynamic behind the three ponies, it’s just reversed who is the daughter’s biological parent.

Like they set out to make a second episode for Quibble Pants & this is what they ended up with.
Imagine if it was Sweetie Belle dealing with suddenly having a new dad because her old dad “got sent to limbo.”
Imagine if instead of using Quibble’s character, they used Sunburst’s character and Starlight was helping him get the approval of his gf’s daughter. Lol.
