The thing is that “Discord downplaying is past” thing never was mention like that, and that easy would do if the first pages of the #78 istead of “How Cosmos fell in Equestria” they would show how Cosmos percept Discord, how actually he was, yeah, he isn’t to violent like Cosmos and neither is a direct murder because kill people directly is just too unfunny to him but he made bad things.
everbody really hopes that is just “Discord lying” instead of be an actual story.
But we shouldn’t overplay him either.
He’s the Dickest Discord.

I think we’re talking past each other. I’m not criticizing the writing, I’m criticizing Discord for, as we both agree, downplaying his past. It’s in-character for him. At the same time, he wasn’t a harmless prankster or something, he went out of his way to ruin the lives of everyone he could get his claws on. Discord even brainwashed Rainbow and Applejack by showing them one of their great fears, a classical Sombra move.
We shouldn’t downplay Discord either.
I think making somebody think they’re a dog is much less evil then say enslaving them or killing them like certain other villains.
And in fairness, Discord would be the type to downplay his evil, but as I said I don’t think he was as evil as you guys claim.
The only reason he drove a wedge between the Mane 6 was so they wouldn’t defeat him, and that wasn’t the worst thing he could ever do. With his powers, he could’ve possibly killed them instead, but apparently he doesn’t like to do that.
That’s not it.
My problem with it is Discord downplaying his own evil. He’s a sadistic prick who enjoyed toying with others, driving wedges between loved ones, and brainwashing a majority into insanity while the rest has to fend with pure chaos around them. He turned MacIntosh mentally into a dog, for crying out loud.
That’s a lot worse than “never wanting to cause harm” unless his definition is solely physical injuries.
Discord wasn’t ever known for having the best tastes.
I don’t get why others assume Discord doesn’t have some slight standards, or find that impossible to “buy.”
Basically he never was a murderous dark villain, or anything. He was basically just a mad hatter dictator or Mr. Myxptlk or Q-type of trickster who saw everything as his playroom, and ponies as toys. That’s another common misconception fans have about him, possibly because of fanworks like “Woonastuck,” and such exaggerated him, and portrayed him as a darker villain then he was.
Heck, looking back at his villainous episodes “Return of Harmony,” half the time he was doing silly/comical things. Even then he wasn’t exactly Sombra, Tirek, or Queen Chrysalis levels of mean. He just liked toying with the Mane 6, or manipulatng them for his own amusement. He was never completely evil, he was just a silly A-hole who liked making everything crazy.

Yeah. I don’t buy the fact that he has “standards”.
It’s entirely possible this is simply Discord’s whitewashed view of himself.
This is my take on this as well.
Discord is used more often in the show than Chrysalis. His actions in the show effect how I see alternate interpretations.
I’m not satisfied with how canon Discord is written. So where does that put me?
We could. I just find Chrysalis to be more interesting to explore into.
That’s just the way I see it, it’s actually not unual for actual IRL criminals to have standards, so it’s understandable some villains might be the same.
In fact, many IRL criminals, and jailbirds HATE pedos, and child/women-beaters. So it’s really not as unusual as some think that terrible people have some moral ground, or loved-ones, and such.
@Red-Supernova
Yet, apparently all those “nice Discord” pics have no effect on you? :P
Though, honestly having fanart influence your opinion on a character that way is kinda unfair honestly, as frankly they’re not canon. I’d kinda hate to see Chrysalis become another “watered down villain” frankly.
I suppose we could just agree to disagree. Honestly, I prefer Discord (villain, or reformed) over Chrysalis. She’s a good villain, but honestly not my favorite.
It’s pretty clear even in the comics that Discord isn’t a “harmless guy who saves orphans”. If he sees orphans on fire, directly in front of him, maybe he’ll save orphans. But you’re correct that he just doesn’t care if the repercussions of his chaos cause death… as long as he’s not there to see it. He’s negligent in the extreme and thoughtless to the point of near-malice, but it’s not his goal to cause physical harm. (Among other things, he seems to love causing mental harm, which you can’t do to someone who’s dead.)
There’s such a thing as nuance. Discord isn’t as bad as Cosmos because he’s not willing to directly commit murder, or break reality. Doesn’t mean he was good in any way, shape or form, just not as bad.
Maybe all the whole Cosmos Arc works better if is a present story where Discord found the love after some reflections about how is he, an inmortal creature with a chaotic sense of humor, which causes several conflicts with any mortal creature, even with friends like Fluttershy.
And he travels for all the universe to clear his mind, finding a lonely Cosmos making fun in a planet, so, Discord makes an interaction with her, having a good expectations with her because she really reminders him.
In Equestria… Cosmos isn´t friendly with others but Discord tries to teach her to be less violent, having thoughts that she really remembers him as his former self.
The relationship becames more toxic but Discord really wants to be with her because she is the only one with more possibilities to be a couple, not a friendship, a couple.
And the Climax is all the past thing of these numbers, ending in the same way than the prologue of the #75.
Just it, Cook wants a story about toxic relationships, but she choose the wrong Discord to tell that story.

Blame the Mommy Chrissy pics for making me think this way about Chrysalis but my preferences for her still stands.
I think we’ve come to an impasse over this debate. Bottom line is that I think there could have been a better way that the show could have convinced me that Discord has moral standards. I had expectations for how I thought he would act post-Twilight’s Kingdom and unfortunately, we didn’t get that. You can like how Discord is written all you want though but it won’t change my mind.

Its really easy as hell. Make him more selfish, backstabbing and cruel in the comic before refomration and more empathethic, considerate and nicer after befirneding Fluttershy, Mane6, Big Mac and Spike and Trixie. Not the other way around. This comic and Matter of principals should exchange their own Discords.
So which is it? Do you want him more “villainous” in the comic, or being “nicer” in the show? It’s like they can’t do anything with him either way to please you guys frankly.
I suppose he could use some balance though at times.
Discord is fine when acting mischievous, but he is not endareaing or charming if he is overdoing it or being childish with it. Tricking Twilight in S4 premiere, sabotage of the Gala with Smooze in S5 or using Rainbow Dash for his own goals in Best Gift Ever are the more charming aspects of his non reformed self. Ruining things for his friends and FLuttershy in Matter of Principals without any motivation or even a clever plan is not something we like to see.
Ironically, I’ve seen some fans complain that’s “what he is nowadays.” (Their opinion, not mine.)
Actually, the Tirek incident did help develop, and cement his heel-face-turn permanently, and prevent him from relapsing into villainy again, and he has gotten on friendlier terms with the main six, and has done some good deeds sense.
Though, I actually like it that he keeps his more mischievous/trolling side in tact, as if he didn’t have that, he wouldn’t be Discord a “spirit of chaos” anymore. That actually makes him more realistic then other “reformed villains” we’ve had, whom lack most of their negative traits completely once reformed. Gatta say, I prefer a reformed villain, who still has traits of their original personality, over a bland one, whom is a completely different character.
Gatta say, I like Chrysalis better as a villain, and honestly I don’t want her reformed, as it’s getting kinda overdone, and honestly, she’s way meaner then Discord is, (And that’s how I like her) so it’s a bit ironic you’d rather see a “worse” behaving villain reformed for no real reason. I think you’re letting your preference for her cloud your judgement a bit, no offense.
Edited
Well there was some major change after Tirek. He became much more protective of Fluttershy, while in S4 he was mostly just using her as a shield against Mane6 fury. Before S4 finale he would probably never considered rescuing her or being so absorbed in making a tea party work at the cost of his health
Those aren’t enough to me. If he wanted to prove he had good qualities, then he should have been written to be like the Genie from the Aladdin series. Befriending three characters doesn’t mean anything when he still acts like a total c*** in Make New Friends But Keep Discord, What About Discord?, Dungeons and Discords, Celestial Advice, and of course A Matter of Principals.
When I saw Discord get backstabbed by Tirek, I thought I would see a drastic change in his behavior. The writers have failed to give me that. There is a reason why I would prefer to see Chrysalis redeemed rather than Discord.
