More likely MW’s parents were rock farmers who neglected basic precautions with radioactive ores. Maybe they experimented with synthesizing plutonium, curium, or even technetium ores*.
 
*Since gems are renewable, earth pony magic has to include accelerating crystal growth and rock formation.

I’ve actually picked up some Britishisms into my vocabulary along the way (through C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Harry Potter, Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, Dorothy L. Sayers, Wallace and Gromit, and Doctor Who).
 
By the way, they got Jing-a-Ling’s name wrong.
