Description
So this is the real Clover the Clever (minus the evil sneer I suppose).

Maybe it’s only a picture, can’t really tall what he or she looks like.
Either:
-A snooty noble Unicorn acquired Clover the Clever’s Cloak after their death and posed with it for a painting to show how important they are. (Look at me, I wear the cloak of a legendary pony. I’m so important)
or
-A snooty noble Unicorn commissioned a painting of themselves AS Clover the Clever in an attempt to liken themselves to a legendary pony. (Look at me, I’m just like Clover the Clever)
or
-The focus of the painting is straight-up just the cloak of Clover the Clever and the snooty noble Unicorn wearing it is completely inconsequential.
I imagine the title card for this painting reads this - Clover the Clever preferred to remain out of the spotlight and was famous for getting sick each Unicorn School Picture Day. As such, most images of Clover the Clever have their face obscured by their famous cloak, modeled here by Lady Snooty Pants. Painting generously donated by Fancy Pants.
This is based on the personality expressed. I honestly feel any interpretation of Clover the Clever’s gender is valid.
I prefer to think genderfluid and knew gender spells. But I’m biased.
That’s what I was thinking. Just finished studying Introduction to Sociology, and I was definitely informed about intersex. It is possible that Puddinghead might have been intersexed instead of being female or male.
Maybe he was a stallion, but dressed up as a mare for his missions.
Or the writers cant make up their minds.
Maybe Clover’s a drag queen. And look a Puddinghead:
Androgyny was the style of the era it seems. It would explain why their genders keep getting mixed up.
Does that mean Twilight misgendered her in Forgotten Friendship, or put up an outdated picture of him in A Matter of Principals? I prefer to think Clover switched between genders on a regular basis.
Coming in late on this, but I know that while they share the same studio, the part of DHX that works on the pony show and the part that work on the EQG side don’t collaborate that much. So whereas Clover’s shown male in FF, if this is meant to be Clover here, that was just a matter that neither side knew the other was dropping a visual image of the character.
(I very much doubt Faust’s show bible consider that much of the history of Equestria to establish that).
I’m sure whoever created the character design was simply unaware that other non-FiM writers had described Clover as male.
That or they decided to depict five artifact owners with their famous artifact, and some rando wearing Clover’s cloak…
Yeah…I agree.
And had a sex change?
Yeah the play has zero relevance. Presumably after they built a successful nation Clover was able to upgrade from the humble smock.
Because it doesn’t look like him/her. The one depicted in Hearth’s Warming Eve was more simple looking. Of course, that was Twilight playing Clover.
There were six portraits and all of them showed the character with the artfact named after them. How can that not be implied to be Clover?
