Changing times, I suppose. I grew up in rural Alabama, and we called each other ‘hillbilly’ the way other people call others ‘dude.’ To be fair, maybe that’s just us.
I dunno about racial, but author Manly Wade Wellman (who lived in the Ozarks for over 30 years and wrote extensively about them in both fiction and nonfiction) bluntly once stated that “You call a man a hillbilly up here, you better be ready to start running.” I assume that means it was not a beloved term.
