Gotta say I’m with @Amethyst_Crystal on this. Starlight Glimmer doesn’t sound insincere at all to me. She sounds like she’s doing her best at a job for which she’s a little inexperienced.
 
And as the dude said, guidance counselors are supposed to be treating students with kid gloves. (Err… velvet gloves in Equestria, no doubt.) A student seeing a school counselor is almost certainly not having a good day, unless they’re coming in for things like college advice.

It’s not that Starlight’s trying to fake sympathy here, it’s that she’s utterly horrible at expressing it, so it comes off sounding fake as all get out.

from Starlight ‘trying to be hot’ to Starlight ‘tricking and deceiving the kid’ and so on.

Uh, a guidance counsoller is supposed to be gentle and considerate,  
because there’s a good chance a student is going to visit them when they are feeling sensitive.  
If everyone was a ‘macho cool bro’ or whatever, we wouldn’t need guidance counsellors.

I think this was the first time someone needed Starlight’s help as a counselor.  
This was also after the school had been open for six months.
