Lightning Bolt flew through the streets of Canterlot, feeling at the top of the world. The school year had just ended, and unsurprisingly it ended with a wild party. He had spent the previous night getting smashed, and maybe even smashing someone…he didn’t remember, honestly, but that didn’t matter. He was living the life. The pegasus was on his way to hang out with some friends before going home for the summer when he heard a sound behind him.
“Lightning?”
Turning around, Lightning saw the source of the voice. It was that pink unicorn…Primrose, was it? Slicking his hair back, he shot her the most charming smile he could. “Hey babe, what’s up?”
“We need to talk.” Primrose said, shuffling her hooves slightly. “Can we…go somewhere more private?”
Lightning smirked. He knew where this was going. “Oh yeah, babe~” he purred as he followed her into a more empty street.
Stopping outside a closed store, Primrose turned to Lightning and took a deep breath. “Do you remember that party last month? The one where we met?”
Did he? Lightning searched through his memory. He had been to many parties, but he did remember her face at…one of them. “Oh yeah, how could I forget that? That was lit!”
Primrose grew sober. Did he not remember how it felt? The connection they shared? Was “lit” all it was to him? Her voice shook slightly. “Lightning, I’m…enceinte.”
”…What?”
”Pregnant, Lightning. I’m pregnant.” She magically summoned a pregnancy test…which showed positive. “You’re going to be a father.”
Lightning couldn’t believe his ears. A father? At this age? It all came rushing back to him…the party, their friends egging them on, the complete solitude as they made love. They were both drinking a little, but still it was crystal clear. This couldn’t be! “M-me? How do you know that?”
”You’re the only stallion I’ve been with since then,” Tears threatened to fill Primrose’s eyes. “W-weren’t we in love? I’ve come to every party, for you, Lightning. I’ve been saving myself for you. We shared something wonderful together, yes? Why wouldn’t you be the father?”
Lightning gulped. It was all a game to him; it always had been. It was only supposed to be a one-night stand. Yet she had feelings for him? He stuttered, struggling to come up with a response.
As Primrose watched the stallion fumble with his words, her girlish fantasies crumbled away. He wasn’t in love with her. He was just a cocky colt looking to satisfy his own desires. He really was no different from the others. “Y-you never cared, did you?”
“U-uh…”
”You didn’t!” Primrose gave an indignant toss of her head, trying to hide the tears welling up. “I gave you my heart, Lightning. I thought you were different. I thought we had a connection. But, now I know you only saw it as a game, something to make you look ‘cool’ in front of your friends. I was a fool, I should have known. I-I’ll never make that mistake again…”
“B-but babe, I-“
”No, Monsieur Bolt. I will not hear any more of this.” Primrose wiped her eyes, her heartbreak turned to anger. “I will never believe your lies. I can see right through stallions like you, with your empty promises and pathetic stuttering. I hope you’re happy with yourself!” She turned around, flicking him with her tail before galloping away in tears.
Lightning froze in his tracks. A father…he was going to be a father, and with a mare he never even loved. He had gone through mare after mare like they were toys, and this is what it came to. All because we wanted to look “cool” in front of his stupid friends. He heard a foal cry from down the street, a harsh reminder of what he had just done. Shaking his head to block out the noise, he tore off his once-beloved leather jacket and flew off to Celestia knows where. He had really bucked up this time…
