Though it doesn’t help that Twist didn’t really interact with her after that thanks to her VA moving away during season 2.

Jackarunda thanks a lot for your help, I’ll see what I can do with the eyes and ears, I’ve always wanted to add something to her coat but i didn’t really know what so I tried hairs, it worked kinda okay but used like 10Gb of ram so nope lol.Also about the hair, I think I saw a tutorial somewhere about making hair particles follow a path or curve, maybe I should try that sometimes since it even allows physics and posing with hooks. I’ve been postong only poses for now because I’m lacking time to actually modify the model, here I can just pose it, check it and render it, but I’ll do my best to make this model even better, CreatorOfPony’s models are good, but they were lacking some features I would have liked to see, so that’s why I modified it, I even made it possible for the model to spread her arms apart like for a hug without the weird artefacts.
But again I really appreciate the time you take to halp me make these models look better, thank you so much

If you want an artist that goes the extra mile to make ponies look damn good in a more realistic looking setting, trombonyponypie is the one to look for. This one is my personal favorites of his work. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re already are familiar with his work since he’s been around for a while, even though he doesn’t post frequently.

I guess it comes down to how far across the spectrum you’re willing to go from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic to Realistic Little Pony: Light is Wonderful. I agree, this does look a lot like something from the show, almost perfectly so (except in 3D). It’s just that the show itself is very lacking in detail because it’s a cartoon.
Again it’s just how far down the detailed-interpretation rabbithole we want to go. For me I see something like >>875114 and I just die, and I wonder what it would look like in the original pony form and 3D rendered (and I’d go pretty darn far to find out). For you it’s maintaining the original show style and that’s beautiful in its own right.
I mean, you don’t have to take advantage of everything a raytracing rendering engine gives you to make it worth using. Sure, SFM could achieve something similar to this, but it would be absurdly difficult to cheat the effects to a level that would make it look convincing, like faking SSS. I don’t even know if SFM is capable of having a heavily subdivided model being imported into the source engine. There are indeed SOME things that this model could use to improve its aesthetics without going overboard realistic (which I don’t think this style is going for or would even work in said hyper realistic environment). But I don’t think it needs everything you’re bringing up at all. As it looks right now I think it’s absolutely worth the hassle of rendering like this in a raytracing rendering engine.
But anyway, like I said in a comment before, I agree with the fact that her coat shouldn’t be flat. I believe this model is a modified version of CreatorOfPony’s, and if I recall correctly his models were already UV unwrapped completely even though it went unused, so not much UV unwrapping work should be needed. It doesn’t need much detail. Here’s my node setup I use for my model’s coat. You won’t need to copy it exactly. The key is the noise texture and how it’s stretched on one axis more than the other to give the impression of somewhat short hair covering the entire body. But otherwise keep the coat materials you have mostly the same with what you’ve got now.
Also keep her eye shines. I struggled with them myself. I wasn’t sure if I wanted them on my model, but really they are kind of essential to make her eyes look like MLP Pony eyes. If you want to use actual light reflections, you’re going to have to stage the lighting in EVERY. SINGLE. SCENE. to shine correctly and perfectly on her eyes to form similar looking eye shines. They might look more pleasing in the end, but it’s not worth the hassle to try to get the reflection on the eyes to look just right when the eyes are very flat by their cartoony nature, thus making the lighting even harder to pull off. However, in terms of the general reflectivity of the eyes themselves it’s hard to say. I think this scene in particular doesn’t have much of anything to give the eyes to reflect. It doesn’t matter how much you crank the reflectivity up if there’s nothing to reflect.
Ear canals… Maybe. I personally gave my model canals, but it’s probably just preference. It wouldn’t look too jarring either way depending on how you approach it.
The mane texture is a hard one. You can’t really make it look better than it is now without shifting towards using actual hair particles (except for MAAAAYBE using displacements, but that would require a ton of subdivisions to get the detail of the hair to pop so it might not be worth it). But the actual hair particle system is an absolute pain in the ass to work with when trying comb it to mimic a mane-style from MLP. And it’s especially more of a pain in the ass when trying to work with hair on top of an animation. It’s a legit critic to ask for real hair, but my models don’t use actual hair for those reasons I just stated. (Also agreeing with you on the teeth materials)
Not bad idea, but normals map work really bad sometimes. I would rather put actual hair mesh on it and a realistic environment, and adding DOF.
This is really far from SFM, because it uses SSS and has better eyelashes, rather than those horrible unwelded ones from SFM.
I think it would be better to give the the eyes refractivity and removing the color textures. Also, to finish, remember that adding a lot of detail on stylized hoases can lead to uncannyness.
It’s a good render and it’s very pretty but 1 hour for 1 image is too much when the subject of the image has so little detail. Raytracing has the capability to create legendary-tier realistic images, but only when used with detailed enough subjects.
Knowing nothing about how this was rendered, here are my suggestions:
(also i don’t know if you made this model or if you’re just posing and rendering it)
- get an HD normal map on her coat to make it look like actual short horse hair
- real horses’ coats have a nice sheen and hers looks like the surface of a vinyl Hasbro toy (get some phong or specular light or whatever the equivalent is in raytracing)
- her eyes man, her eyes.. eyeballs are very smooth and glassy, even wet. Her eyes on this model have no reflectivity at all. They need to be envmapped hardcore. And those big white spots inside her pupils, those are supposed to be spots of reflected light, not painted-on-her-eyeballs white spots.
- the model could definitely afford to go deeper into her ear canals. When things get this realistic, ponies don’t have smooth flaps for ears
- i can see some surface texturing on her hair, but i can’t see any light scattering through the hairs themselves, which of course is because there are no individual hairs. Her hair is like a finely textured chunk of plastic. I don’t know if it’s even possible to make a model with actual hair in (whatever program was used to make this model)
- her teeth need some phong (specular) too. Just a little though

well then why spend an hour creating one image with an extremely realistic rendering method? You could achieve something roughly comparable with a video-game style rendering method in 1/100000000th the time. For hardcore raytracing to be worth it, you need some detail in the image.
For reference, this is what you can achieve with raytracing:
The most you can EVER hope to achieve with this model of glimmityglammeroopaloo would be what looks like a good photograph of a vinyl toy. If that’s what you’re going for, then ignore me and proceed and have fun.
But a good SFM artist could achieve roughly the same thing using the super cheaty videogame lighting methods, and even render it fast enough to be able to make a video out of it, but SFM could NEVER hope to achieve anything like the above wikipedia picture.
And to be completely honest, I’d much rather a realistic-looking raytrace image than more SFM crap. I detest SFM, there’s so much of it. I think all you need to do here is add an environment, some texturing, some specular highlights and reflectivity, and use a more detailed model, and your images will instantly become Featured On Derpibooru Legendary Tier pony art.
And despite all the criticism, I do like this image. I love seeing these, they’re so cute and better than most 3D renders already.

This is not a picture of Twist. Twist is worst pony, always and forever. Twist stopped associating with Apple Bloom after obtaining her cutie mark and became the precursor to Starlight’s story.

Because the code hasn’t been made yet (or is being saved for the next April Fools prank).
It is the same shader as in my last 2 renders without any modifications whatsoever, even the lights are the same, except at different angles
Correct me if I’m wrong here galawaille, but judging by his other work I think that look is just part of his particular style.
