The only reason I feel Sombra failed for me was because they set him up as one sort of villain then presented him as a completely different kind. If he’s supposed to be this ominous, atmospheric force of nature, why was the hologram with Celestia neccesary? They should have made him like the Windingeos, just this mysterious thing nobody knows anything about. Establishing that he was the Dictator of the Crystal Empire kills the mystery and makes Celestia and Luna look REALLY incompetent. With Discord and Nightmare Moon, you actually feel like this is something only the Elements can defeat, but they actually made Sombre STRONGER by throwing him under the ice.

Discord produced so much raging butthurt when he was unveiled, yet he turned out to be best villain.
 
I still maintain that for what he was, Sombra is even better, though.

I guess since you weren’t around since Season 1(I joined way back, when the fandom consisted of /co/, old MLP enthusiasts, and of course a new generation of little girls), you would feel that way. But yes, many fans did think Discord would look like a bad alicorn OC. Hell, on EqD, a pic of a “so dark and edgy xD” alicorn OC was posted, the admin(I forget if it was Seth or one of the others) said that it would be cool if Discord looked like said bad alicorn OC, and a big chunk of the fandom seemed to agree. Even Ponibooru briefly labeled the bad alicorn OC as under the Discord tag!
 
I was so pleased when Discord was revealed. Not only did it show that the writers had originality, but it produced some delicious butthurt from the fanbase.

I will admit, my perspective on Discord is rather skewed. Return of Harmony premiered before I joined the fandom, so I already knew John Delancine was voicing Discord when I saw my first picture of him. I knew right away what kind of villain they were going with, and felt his appearance was almost trying too hard to be goofy and came off unsettling.

Chrysalis has nice hair, but she was stupid to reveal herself like she did…  
Also I find it funny how her name was never said in the episode, just “queen”.

I think this diagram doesn’t even need to be an indication of who the best villain is, more so it indicates where each of the villains excells most in what makes a good villain. In Chrysalis’ case, she is maybe a perfect balance, but from there, other villains excel her in specific fields. Using Discord as an example, I’d say he actually has better dialogue than she did, if nothing else.

I dunno about that. When Discord was first announced, many thought he would be a black “so dark and edgy xD” alicorn, a NMM on crack. When he was revealed to be a cartoony chimera, many fans got butthurt and thought he wouldn’t be threatening. They were wrong, but yeah.

Nigtmare Moon is scary looking, but still rather conventional, with her Alicorn-ness being her most distinguishing feature. Discord is just do misshapen and bizzare that he skips right over being whimsical and looks frightening. Same idea applies to The Joker.
 
Sombra’s problem is that he isn’t Sauron-y enough. They shouldn’t have given us this backstory about him being the dictator of the Crystal Empire if that wasn’t going to relate to his actions at all. It gave us false expectations and took away the mystery of a potentially frightening villain.

True enough, just IMHO the two-parters of MLP never really appealed to me as much as the self-contained episodes.

IF Sombra had a shadow form of the Windingo horses from Hearth episode, I could go for the Sauron factor. Since he had a defining shape and design, expected him to have at least some dialogue…
