Description

They both sat in silence for a few moments. The sun must have finally gone down outside, because the tent walls had become long shadows, barely illuminated by the faint glow of the crystal ball. Falcon supposed that thing did have a useful purpose after all. She finally cleared her throat and spoke again.
“Looks like it got dark out. Hope no one else was waiting in line.”
Chakra seemed to relax, now that the conversation had moved away from the heavy topic. “I don’t suppose anypony is. Not many establishments seem to stay open long past dark in this town.” She stood up from the table, and Falcon mirrored her movement, assuming it was time to exit the tent.
“Yeah, most of them don’t. Bertha’s will still be open for a while though.”
“Bertha’s?” Chakra asked politely, though not really caring.
“Bertha’s Grill. They’ve got the best oatburgers in town and fresh local produce.” Chakra’s ears perked forward a little at the mention of oatburgers. Those were a luxury she hadn’t sampled in some time.
“I could… show you where it is, sometime, if you wanted to go get dinner.” Chakra’s expression became a little guarded and skeptical, and Falcon quickly explained, “Not like a date or anything, just a local showing a new visitor around.”
“Well, I’m not that new, I’ve been here for a few days now.” Chakra automatically mumbled, considering the offer. Finally she spoke up more clearly, “Sure, I would like to go for a hayburger. What about tomorrow afternoon? Early dinner?”
“Works for me,” she replied. They were standing outside of Chakra’s tent now, and she glanced up at the wooden sign that depicted a crystal ball with swirling, foggy contents. “What about your business though?”
“Well, selling yourself as an oddity only lasts while you’re new in town. I think most of the ponies who really wanted to come and see me, have already.”
“Alright, I’ll come and find you tomorrow afternoon then,” Falcon said, before trotting off towards home.
For the first time, Falcon felt a little sorry for this unicorn. If she wanted to succeed, it meant she had to be constantly seen as an outsider, an oddity to go and gawk at. Even though Falcon hadn’t always been ‘normal’ she knew that she had never once felt that way. She had her parents, two sisters, little brother, and a hoof-full of good friends who all made her feel very accepted and loved. This mare didn’t have any of that. She might not even have any home or town to go back to, should something ever happen to her business.
Falcon contemplated all of this as she walked past her family’s farm. For the first time in months, she stopped and really looked at the big, old farm house. Her great-grandsire had built it with his wife, and raised his family there. The property used to end where a long building stood to the east of the farmhouse. This long building was a small line of townhouses, which meant the inside was split up into what felt like resonably-sized apartments. Her family owned this building now, and Falcon and her siblings excersized some independance by living out of their parent’s house, but still a short walk away from it.
After staring at her family’s farm for a few moments, Falcon finally sighed and trotted into her home. One thought had crossed her mind a few times since she had made the decision to get signed onto a professional athletic team. When she joined them, she would have to move out. She had always known that she would have to leave town to pursue her goals anyway. It’s not like Gallup was the kind of place where the Equestria Games would ever be held.
She curled up in her bed, under the stack of quilts that had been given to her by her mother and grandmother. She had so much history here, and she was going to walk away, possibly as early as next week. How would she do that?
“Maybe I can ask Chakra for advice on that,” she thought to herself as she let her mind settle. She hugged one pillow between her forelegs, and nuzzled her face into a second. She always slept better like this, and it didn’t take her long to nod off into a peaceful slumber.
