Description
Happy Veteran’s Day everyone! Even if you have no opportunity to do anything to thank a veteran, at least take a moment to think about it and at least say a mental “thank you” I know not every veteran is a saint and you may not agree with the reasons they were sent to serve, but it’s important to separate that from respecting them for choosing to serve and take on an unenviable job.
I’d imagine some things are different in Equestria than here, but the principle is the same. In a perfect world, there would be no war and I would think there would be fewer conflicts in the pony world. But as the Yaks proved, not all others share the ponies’ peaceful mindset. Combined with all the raging monsters roaming around, even Equestria would need a standing military. Though Celestia tries to prevent war, sometimes she must make the horrible choice to send some to fight and protect the rest of the nation’s citizens. The lives of a few given to save the lives of the many.
That doesn’t stop ponies from hating her for it, though. They may not know all the factors in the decision to fight, but they do know the pain of losing someone they love. So they blame Celestia for it. Celestia takes the abuse on the chin and, in private, probably gives herself some mental abuse with the endless What-ifs, if-onlys and just general regrets for the times she wish there had just been a better solution.
As for the holiday itself, Canterlot, being the capitol, would host the largest parade with the veterans parading up the streets to the gates of Canterlot Castle. There, they are greeted by Princess Celestia who says a few words of deep gratitude before removing her crown, setting it at their hooves and bowing before those she asked to endanger themselves in her service.
The other princesses would host other parades elsewhere, but it’s important that Celestia be the one to host the largest parade. She’s the one who’s governed the longest and through the most conflicts.

Nope, you didn’t: I’m quite jumpy. It’s me who has to apologize: I’m sorry.
@Spacefrog
I should have made myself more clear before, that’s very true. Sorry for that.

“what I don’t understand is when I stopped being civil.”
I never said you did.
My statement was a general reminder for everyone in the thread to remain civil, because discussions of this nature can easily spiral out of control. I’m sorry you felt I was targeting you specifically, I was hoping to be clear I wasn’t targeting anyone specific by use of the words: “remind people”. Sorry I failed in that regard.
At no point did you relay where you where from.
Even if All of the Blue Division where there for the reasons you think, they where just under 46.000 people out of the roughly 2 million non-germans fighting against the soviet union on the eastern front.
So you have to understand why I went for the general reason to join the Wehrmacht.
Edited because: Saw the follow-up post
From Springer
From a real veteran (Hitler thought those guys had nerve, but still considered “Iberians” an inferior race).
From an historian
This info both confirms and refutes my opinions and Zebaziz’s: none of us is right, nor is wrong. Now, yep, I’m outta here: what I don’t understand is when I stopped being civil.

OK, let’s forget it.
As for what you said were actually some who volunteered becuase they were Republicans and wanted to clean up thenselves in front of the dictatorship we had. Others wanted to defect to the USSR and were used by the USSR as cannon fodder and then sent to Siberia by that bastard Stalin because “they were Trotskists”. But if you want evidence, well, just look and see
And this is my last word.
Edited
Yes, I would like to see the evidence you have that every single individual held the exact same beliefs, motivations and reasons for fighting.
While you’re gathering it, I just want to remind people ahead of time to stay civil. No need to continue the hostilities of the past.

They were Fascist criminals and went there becouse of pure hatred. No complications here. Then they would have come for the Yanks and the Brittons for beliving in democracy.
Also, they were the same people who sentenced my great-grandfather to death for being an alledged Commie and church burner (he wasn’t). He got saved by a friend. Want to read more things that show they were just a bunch of criminals?

The point was that is is celebrated in a heck of a lot more countries than America
@bigladiesman
Well it is a messy topic, but considering the political landscape at the time, I can easily understand why people would travel to the eastern front and fight communists, even if it meant allying with Nazi-germany.
It’s not so much whether she fights alongside them or not - we don’t expect our leaders to expose themselves to danger - it’s whether she’s sending them to fight for a worthwhile cause. Ordering a bunch of soldiers into a punitive expedition to avenge an imagined slight is an awful thing to do even if she’s right there in the vanguard. Accepting personal risk is a noble gesture, but it’s still only a gesture and circumstances dictate whether making it is a sensible or rightful act.
Thanks!
No it was the Crystal War timeline. We saw Celestia on the front lines.
Was it in the “Bad Changeling future”?
Edited
Well, we did see that in a time of war Celestia does fight alongside the soldiers. But that doesn’t mean she’s able to protect every single one. Nor protect every front.
If more than one battle is taking place, Celestia can only be in one place. And, depending on the size of the specific battle, may not be able to provide protection for every soldier participating.
[As a side note: We only know fer certain that Tirek had about 4ish towns worth of Pony magic, and the group of Pegasi that charged him. We don’t know for certain if he had received the magic from the entirety of Equestria.]
Edited
Long story short, Celestia taking abuse from her subjects for sending ponies to fight is stupid and counterproductive. What I would like to see her do is actually fight alongside her ponies and protect them with her magic.
If she would appoint ponies she trust to take the charge while she protect her soldiers or assist in dealing with threats, she would be able to tell herself that she did all she could to protect those she send to risk their lives. It would be way more productive.
Not in my country, and as far as I know, is a part of Europe.
You’re welcome.
Yeah, you’re right. Everyone deserves to have a happy day.
Happy day, everybody.
Oh, OK then.
Not in my country: we were neutral/no belliregent on both WW.
However there’s been some shit-raining in my city because a priest recently celebrated the veterans who volunteered to aid the Nazi army in the Russian campaign. That is: they paid tribute to your enemies, the ones who were out to kill your soldiers for the Führer (at the time, you were Allied). It’s our version of a KKK rally: those guys were evil incarnate. Fortunately, there will be an inspection for Fascist and Nazi extolling.
You Americans are lucky to have the Army as a respected institution with Democratic values and people like Eisenhower: we had a military dictatorship for 40 years…

Ummmm Here in Canada we call it Remeberence day.
Did you mean:
Also known as Armistice Day in Europe and the Commonwealth
Thanks and the same to you.
In fact, happy day everybody, normal or not.
