I agree he’s too often a squid monster, but can still have his place as a physical representation of the viewpoint ‘getting’ to someone.
>so many games I played has you punching out Cthulhu in the end.
Then it wasn’t Cthulhu, Cthulhu is Lovecraft’s world view personified. Lovecraft was a “mechanistic materialist” who embraced the philosophy of cosmic indifferentism. Lovecraft believed in a purposeless, mechanical, and uncaring universe. Human beings, with their limited faculties, could never fully understand this universe, and the cognitive dissonance caused by limitation leads to insanity. Lovecraft’s viewpoint made no allowance for religious belief which could not be supported scientifically, with the incomprehensible, cosmic forces of his tales having as little regard for humanity as humans have for insects.
Cthulhu is more of an idea an incomprehensible force.
I’ve never seen any games where you are “Punching out” Cthulhu in the end. Normally he’s not even present as you’re role is to just stop him from coming. I’ve seen games where there are Cthulhu like enemies, but not Cthulhu himself.
There is no such thing as too much Cthulhu!
That episode always makes me cry.
