No, I think it’s more a case of arrested development. The changelings were starved for love because they didn’t know how to share it. Thorax learning how was what allowed them to undergo a metamorphosis to the higher form we see here.

Perhaps. I’m kind of reminded of the eggplants from Courage the Cowardly Dog and how they didn’t get much water until the end of the episode.
