What if…
Instead of sending Nightmare Moon to the moon right after she turns, Celestia decides she cannot fight her younger sister because of how much she loves her. So, after getting roughed up by her angry sibling and dragged around Canterlot in humiliation (by ropes), she is banished to the Everfree Forest. During her banishment, Celestia grows and learns the Elements of Harmony through kind acts she does during her stay, earning each color of the rainbow in her mane for every Element she discovers.

Nuuuuu
So Nightmare Moon comes back, beats the tar out of her sister and publicly humiliates her again, and Celestia has to acquire the Elements… Again.
Can you imagine how terrified she’d be of failing a second time?
This is automatically rendered false. They both used the Elements to defeat Discord. So Celestia already had them.
Unless she lost them and a thousand years later, instead of Twilight and her friends, the pilot stars Celestia as she learns about friendship and reconciles with her sister that way.
Which would make a reasonably good AU.
Celestia returns, more powerful than even Discord, and defeats her sister… but promptly misuses the Elements, because she did not know how to use them. So instead of saving her sister, she banishes her in turn, and promptly loses her newfound power.
Serious sads bruh.
