She did that because it was necessary, the fate of the world lied in her hands(and to be fair, she SUCKED at it, considering it took discord to figure out where the keys are).  
But look at the first one, the elements of harmony themselves. She never questioned them, not even once, never bothered to research them, never bothered to check out how they actually work. She just got them and then…ignored them entirely because hanging out with your friends is more fun. Same with the castle/map. If there is no imminent disaster approaching, research can wait, taking a spa and eating applecake is more important.

The entire openeing is completely pointless and stupid. Why did the map need to be broken if you were just going to fix it five seconds after you said it was broken? Why go with this overly convoluted way of answering a question nobody had? Seriously all you had to do was say “Gee it’s been a while since the map called us. I wonder where it wants us to go?” And there you go, all fixed and without all the pointless questions about the map being offline and the magic McGuffin repair job shit.

I don’t think you quite understood what they said, you should rewatch the beginning of the episode

So after being quiet for several episodes they decided; “SCREW YOU, MAP! WE OWN YOU NOW!” And finally getting to do friendship missions on a troubled place that’s been going for who knows how long?  
Gotta Love the logic in this show. :/

Starlight: “That map of yours is connected to all of Equestria, this part is my home”

Nah, Starlight explained it differently. She said the time travel spell just allowed her to go to any time or place in Equestria; she didn’t repurpose it, it was an amplifier. After the spell was brought back to the present, the magic from the map absorbed the spell, making it inoperational and preventing anyone from using the time travel spell again.

I bet she charges cutthroat rate for a measly bandwith.

There’s just something disappointing and underwhelming about the map being damaged and fix this way.

I like to imagine those were overdue friendship problems it’s too late to act on, but the double Twilight pretty much confirms booting up glitch.

It may have taken a while to notice something was wrong, after all the map didn’t send them to places all the time. Then once they realized it was malfunctioning they would have to figure out how to fix it.
 
And it may not have been simple even with Starlight’s help. She used the map as an amplifier, but actually figuring outs its inner workings to the point that she could undo whatever damage she had done it probably took some time and help from Twilight.

I love how they showed the map “rebooting” complete with things like saying two Twilights had to be somewhere.
