I don’t ship these two but I’m of the opinion that with a bit of imagination, almost any shipping can work. Picture the following.
 
Spitfire suffers a career threatening injury. She may never fly again. Her surgery is successful and herwings are saved but her never-say-die attitude abandons her with the agony of her physical rehabilitaton. Doctors, friends, and family all try to cheer her up but she apparently gives up the will to fight for her recuperation. Rainbow Dash remembered how the addition of Cheese Sandwich to her birthaversary and summons him to the hospital where Spitfire is admitted.
 
Cheese’s off-the-wall wacky sense of humor has a surprisingly positive effect on the tough exteriored Wonderbolt. Relieved of her responsibilities for the first time in a long time, Spitfire’s able to have a laugh and let her guard down around somepony. When Cheese sees he has her hooked, he refuses to pay her another visit until she completes a day’s PT. Spitfire pouts tsundere-style but eventually misses his visits enough to endure the pain of the PT. As promised, Cheese returns.
 
It comes up in conversation that Cheese Sandwich, a pony always on the move, admits that he’s never had a very special somepony. Spitfire, who has become very attached to Cheese, asks if he would consider her as a candidate. Cheese admits that he also has developed feelings for her but he delicately declines with the following statement.
 
“When you were well, you had the sky and the ground. Right now, you only have the ground. That’s where I am. The sky isn’t an option for you right now. If you had both, you might not have chosen me. Get better first. When you have the sky again, come back to me and ask me that. You might choose your VSS differently.. but, if not, I might answer you differently.”
 
With the possibility of a relationship with Cheese, Spitfire happily works harder than ever to regain her wingpower to prove that her feelings are not just a flight of fancy.

That awkward moment when you realize that people shipping your ponysona is basically like people shipping you with a fictional character. Poor Weird Al. Lena Hall is next…

Petition to stop all the insane shippings of Spitfire and other ponies when. I’m fine with OC’s even though it kills me on the inside. I’m fine with some of the more athletic canon characters. But stuff like this and Braeburn that wouldn’t happen in a million years just destroys my soul.

I don’t really like spitsandwhich. dirty name to date but uh… Yeah, shockingly never occurred to me this ship could exist. Well damn.

Spitfire doesn’t seem tomshare Op’s taste for shipping, it seems…
