True on both counts. In the case of the furry fandom (which is a little outside the subject area here, but relevant since they have more of a reputation for doing this sort of thing), media organizations seem to love of putting fursuiters on cameras as typical representations of the fans, but statistical studies have indicated that the number of people who do is actually fairly small (I believe under 20%, last I checked). After all, a good quality suit of this kind can cost literally thousands of dollars to make, and is a bit difficult to maintain. And of course it is not that comfortable to wear for long periods of time do to the overheating issues and such. Still people do it, because the enjoyment they get out of wearing them (and, I suspect, the admiration and appreciation of their hard work creating them) makes it worthwhile.

People like different things, really. It might not be the most efficient, and it certainly costs a lot, but some people think it’s worth spending money on it, and that’s what they’re going to do. Plus, not everyone likes EQG or its artstyle.

Just seems that regular cosplay is more efficient and comfortable. Hell, especially with EqG characters it’s much easier to cosplay as them.

Pretty much this. Fursuiters do it simply because like to pose as their own characters, or in this case cosplay as their favorite characters.

I’be never worn a fursuit like this, so I can’t speak first hand. Wearing for short intervals and being able to stay cool makes sense.

My understanding of them is that, for the most part, they get warm very quickly. So the people that do wear them might only do so in relatively short intervals (and have someone on hand to help them out of it if need be), or (depending on the location they are being worn) take advantage of special rooms set up for cooling off in. Some varieties of these suits are probably cooler than others, though, and in a climate controlled area it might be a bit warm but perhaps not overwhelmingly so. Not being a fursuiter myself I can only comment on what I’ve heard.
 
As for the why, though, I don’t think that’s too hard to figure out. Like anyone else who dresses up, it’s likely either out of appreciation for the character, wish fulfillment/a desire to be someone (or somepony) else for a while, or maybe some combination of the two.

This looks VERY familiar… o.o I remember going to a furmeet with my girlfriend in South Carolina once… One of her friends was a pony fursuiter who looked a lot like this one… Gah, I can’t remember which pony he was cosplaying as since I wasn’t an MLP fan yet at the time… But it was certainly fun~
 
My girlfriend’s a fursuiter BTW, though not a pony fursuiter. And yes, it gets VERY hot inside those things. Most fursuiters have stretchy headscarf thingies to prevent the inside of their fursuit heads from collecting sweat. Furry conventions also have lounge rooms with plenty of water bottles and lots of fans whirring at every corner.
 
Despite the discomfort, most fursuiters are willing to endure the heat to have fun and they have lots of it~

I have no place to judge but I really don’t get people who dress up in fursuits…
